Doping is still a problem in cycling, Benedetto Roberti | bettor.com

Doping is still a problem in cycling, Benedetto Roberti

Italian investigation judge Benedetto Roberti noted that doping is still a problem in sports revealing that the new undetectable versions of EPO are still being used in by several cyclists as reported by Tuttobici magazine.

Benedetto uncovered several doping criminals related to the Lance Armstrong case and also the disclosed the key evidence against the controversial Dr. Michele Ferrari.

He stated that doping is currently operational in every level of cycling wither it be professional, amateur and even Gran Fondo riders use performance enhancing drugs to achieve the desired results.

Roberti said that, it is a normal perception to have a soft corner for the cyclists but it is the riders themselves who are to be blamed for their wrongdoings more than anyone else.

He told the magazine that the sport is badly plagued with doping and things are not looking good in the future.

Even exposing Lance Armstrong in the biggest doping scandal of all times has not really changed the preposition much.

Cyclists in all levels of the game are still doping to enhance their performances without even thinking about the consequences or how badly they can influence the game.

?We're dealing with scruple-less people who inject themselves with everything, without knowing what they're doing: products stolen from hospitals, from Eastern countries without any guarantees on the quality".

He revealed that according to the latest information the newly used substances that are untraceable are currently used by several cyclists.

Erythropoietin Z by Retacrit, known as EPO Z is an example along with a new version of the Chinese EPO that can easily get you pass any doping test and was the best seller in the recent Olympics.

?There's also AICAR that is brought in from the East as a powder and is apparently a kind of genetic doping. In simple terms, it helps reset muscle fibres after huge efforts. It can't be found in anti-doping tests either".

"So have things improved? Has sport and especially cycling really taken a new direction? I say no and whoever says the opposite doesn't love our sport".

It will be interesting to see, how UCI responds to Benedetto Roberti allegations and takes necessary measures to prevent any future damages to the sport.

Elvis, Beatles top list of most-forged autographs

Reuters

Singer Elvis Presley is pictured in an undated, autographed publicity photograph.

By Eric Kelsey, Reuters

LOS ANGELES -- Elvis Presley and The Beatles top the list of most-forged celebrity signatures in 2012, with less than half of their autographs for sale certified as genuine, memorabilia authenticators PSA/DNA said on Thursday.

The King and The Fab Four British rockers, who topped the list two years ago when it was last released, joined notable figures such as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and late pop star Michael Jackson on the list of most-forged celebrity signatures.

Late American astronaut Neil Armstrong landed at No. 3 on the list, after fake Armstrong signatures rose significantly after his death in July.

One reason forgeries of Armstrong's autograph soared was that he rarely signed for fans during his life, Joe Orlando, president of Newport Beach-based PSA/DNA, told Reuters.

"Armstrong is someone who is very conscious of the value of his own autograph," Orlando said. "Even before he passed away he was very tough to get ... It really heightens the level of his market."

Secretaries and assistants responding to huge volumes of fan mail are one reason for fake signatures floating through the marketplace, said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles.

"Back in the day, the kids would write to the movie studios," Barrett said.

"There was absolutely no financial gain 50 years ago and secretaries and assistants just wanted to make them happy. A lot of times people stumble upon an old box of signed photographs in grandma's attic and don't know they're forged."

Barrett, whose specialty is late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe's autographs, said that official documents such as contracts and checks are reliable sources to verify whether or not a signature is forged.

"A good rule of thumb is to compare it to a signed contract," she said. "Sometimes (celebrities) would have secretaries or others sign photos and letters but they couldn't have a contract signed by a proxy."

Russia's new spaceship will fly to you the moon, let you swing among the stars

Russias new spaceship will fly to you the moon, let you swing among the stars

Russia's protracted attempts at replacing the aging space warhorse that is Soyuz may finally bear fruit. RSC Energia has announced that it has finished the design of a prototype spacecraft under the country's Prospective Piloted Transport System -- the equivalent of the Orion program. The as-yet unnamed craft is expected to be ready for testing by 2017, and unlike the current model, will be fully reusable. It's been designed not only as a taxi to take cosmonauts (and the odd multi-billionaire) to the International Space Station, but also ferry crews to the moon. That is, of course, assuming that Elon Musk doesn't get there first and make the moon his summer home.

House back Sunday night, will have 29.5 hours to strike deal on fiscal cliff

President Barack Obama salutes as he returns via Marine One from a Christmas visit with his family in Hawaii, to??Will parachutes be provided? Republican House leaders informed their rank-and-file on a conference call Thursday that they have to be back at work at 6:30 p.m. Sunday ? giving them, oh, 29.5 hours to forestall the ?fiscal cliff.?

Absent a last-minute compromise, Americans will see across-the-board income-tax hikes and painful federal spending cuts come into force January 1. Some economists fear that, taken together, the measures could plunge the economy into a new recession.

Technically, however, the Congress could vote the cliff into oblivion at any time ? either before OR after the income-tax increases and spending cuts are slated to take effect. Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor noted on Twitter that lawmakers ?may be in session through Wednesday, January 2.?

House Speaker John Boehner told his troops on the conference call that the Senate would have to act first, either by passing, or by amending, legislation the House has already passed to avert the cliff.

?If the Senate will not approve these bills and send them to the president to be signed into law in their current form, they must be amended and returned to the House,? he said, according to a source on the call.

America's Mental Health Crisis | Ru1Fitness

On Feb. 9, 1844, the governor of Missouri ate breakfast, went to his office and locked the door. Then he shot himself with a rifle. Thomas Reynolds? death rattled the state and inspired a conversation about mental illness that led to the founding of its first public mental hospital.

168 years later, Missouri's mental health system is in crisis.

?The place is something out of the 1920s,? Missouri State Rep. Jeanne Kirkton said of Fulton State Hospital, the state's first. ?Have you ever seen ?One Flew Over The Cuckoo?s Nest?? It?s that, but worse.?

A report by the Missouri Mental Health Department found that Fulton ?is inordinately expensive to operate and is an extremely dangerous environment for both patients and staff.?

For the state?s severely mentally ill, Fulton is one of a dwindling number of options. According to an April 2012 Missouri Hospital Association report, there are only 637 licensed psychiatrists in the state. Budget cuts have forced both public and private hospitals to reduce the number of psychiatric beds they provide, while community-based mental health services have lost $17.2 million in the past 3 years alone.

Missouri is not an outlier. The National Alliance on Mental Illness in 2009 gave America's mental health system a D rating. When state budgets across the country have needed trimming in recent years, mental health services have often been among the first to go.

?It is not a glamorous issue,? said Sandy Pasch, a state representative from Wisconsin. ?Mental health is often one of the first things to cut ... it?s not one of the heavily lobbied groups."

In the past three years, $4.35 billion for services has been cut from state budgets across the country, according to a report by the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors Research Institute. While states are slashing funding for treatment, private care is getting harder to obtain. Mental health advocates say that the number of providers nationwide has decreased in recent years. The ones that do practice often don?t take insurance or are all booked up.

?Even if you have a benefits program that should offer you mental health and substance abuse services, it?s often difficult to find a provider who will even take you just to get in the door for an assessment,? said Sarah Steverman, the director of state policy for Mental Health America, the nation's largest non-profit mental health advocacy group. ?We don?t have enough providers, and the providers that we do have don?t necessarily have to service the population that's most in need because there?s plenty of demand.?

Amelio D?Onofrio is a New York City-based psychologist who teaches at Fordham University. He said he requires patients to pay out of pocket for treatment.

?Not everyone can afford that -- it limits the clientele to a certain socioeconomic status,? he said. ?The reimbursement rates [from insurance companies] to mental health providers are not on par with making a living. These become difficult choices. I want to practice, but I?m going to do it in a way that I can practice the way I want to practice, not be limited with the paperwork that insurance companies require.?

Jackie Malasky, a young professional working in Washington, D.C., said she used to see a therapist, but the out-of-pocket costs stopped her.

?It just got to the point where it was too expensive,? she said. ?I want to get back into therapy but it?s hard to find somebody you vibe with and it?s really expensive.?

Even if providers do take insurance, insurance companies may not cover every service.

?It is much cheaper for insurance companies to pay for medication than ongoing psychotherapy, and their lobbies and the money spent on advertisements have slowly infused our cultural thinking about this,? said Lloyd Sederer, the author of The Family Guide to Mental Health Care and an adjunct professor at Columbia University?s Mailman School of Public Health who also serves as an adviser to HuffPost's Healthy Living section.

But Susan Pisano, a spokeswoman for America?s Health Insurance Plans, the trade group that represents the health insurance industry, said that insurance companies aim to cover the services that fit patients best, no matter the cost.

?Health plans provide coverage for very expensive things every day of the week,? she said. ?The decisions have to do with what the science tells us is working best.? Furthermore, ?if the typical recommendation doesn?t apply, then there?s a way for the physician to ask for an exception.?

But there are signs that many people are slipping through the cracks. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 40 percent of adults with serious mental illnesses reported not getting treatment at all in 2009.

One of those adults is Marsha Roach?s 30-year-old son Peter, who is autistic and also suffers from substance abuse issues. Roach said that her son received extensive support in middle school and high school. Once he graduated, everything changed.

?It's really a nightmare,? she said. "It just blows my mind with what I?ve had to go through. We've been very unsuccessful in everything we?ve tried.?

Peter Roach lives in Branford, Conn., with his mother and grandmother and hasn?t worked or taken classes since high school. His mother, who has a full-time job, has tried for years to get him into supportive housing.

?A big part of the reason is because he has family. They keep putting him at the back of the list because there are people who don?t,? Marsha Roach said. ?What?s going to happen when I die? Who?s going to take care of him??

Roach has worked with counselors from BH Care, a nearby non-profit behavioral health care provider. She says that one counselor told her ?if you can?t deal with him, drop him off at a [homeless] shelter.?

Mike Fitzpatrick, the Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said that there is a total lack of a support system for caregivers.

?Ultimately it's families and caregivers who are taking care of and providing support to the people that they love, and too often they?re going it alone.?

Fitzpatrick said that when caregivers are worried about loved ones, especially those who are resistant to getting help, calling the police is often the most accessible option.

Samantha Bernstein of Stamford, Conn., has twice called 911 on her son Max, who has pediatric bipolar disorder.

?He would have tantrums that lasted over an hour, I mean throwing himself on the floor,? she said. ?He once had a tantrum that was so major that he slipped and hit his head and needed stitches.?

She said that both times she called, the response team was extremely helpful. However, Max?s issues continued.

?He was hospitalized eight times between the ages of 5 and 7,? she said.

Bernstein enrolled her son in Hampshire Country School, a therapeutic boarding school for boys in Rindge, N.H. She said that Max, now 10, no longer has violent outbursts and is off medication. Thanks to the school, he has plenty of adult supervision and constant support.

Hampshire's sticker price? $49,000 per year, according to its website.

That amount is not something most families can afford, given that the median income in U.S. households is only $52,762. But while mental health treatment often comes at a great cost to both patients and governments, studies suggest it?s more expensive for the nation to avoid dealing with mental illness than it is to treat it properly.

A 2008 study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health found that serious mental illness costs the U.S. economy $193.2 billion dollars per year in lost earnings. That amount doesn't account for other associated costs, like the cost of incarcerations. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 56 percent of state prisoners and 45 percent of federal prisoners have symptoms or a recent history of mental health issues.

People with mental illness "are by and large invisible people to many state legislators, so they?re the easier cuts to make without having a big backlash,? said Kirkton, the Missouri lawmaker. ?It?s most unfortunate because when you look down into the numbers of how much it really costs state and local governments, when you think about all the impacts of mental illness on employment, hospital care, public safety, it's not a pennywise decision.?

David Lowery, Cracker, Camper toil on despite bad odds | Tom ...

Fans may know David Lowery as a solo artist, Cracker frontman or anchor of his self-proclaimed ?unwieldy, chaotic, barely stable collective? Camper Van Beethoven, which has a new album, ?La Costa Perdida,? and celebrates its 30th anniversary next year.

But to his students at the University of Georgia, he is a math genius who helps demystify the increasingly complicated modern music industry.

?I get people to understand how the money works, because it?s a business built on failure,? he says. ?Almost everything that record labels, publishers and songwriters put out are failures, and just every once in a while, one song is kind of a hit.?

Depressing? You have no idea, says Lowery, 52, who brings CVB and Cracker to San Francisco this week.

Young artists shouldn?t waste time thinking they?re skilled, he argues, because talent means nothing in this equation, and luck is everything.

?Most people who tell you they have a formula for success have deluded themselves. They?ve just created a narrative fallacy about why something is successful,? says the singer, who ? with his spectacles and bushy beard ? looks rather professorial.

?It?s a very strange class that I teach ? we talk about risk and reward and the way markets work. It?s a really philosophical thing.?

What does he think accounts for Simon Cowell, and carefully conceived hitmakers like One Direction?

Cowell has more ability than the next producer, the singer admits.

?But we?re just talking about someone like him failing one out of eight times, instead of one out of 10,? says Lowery, who actually worked as a risk-assessing quantitative analyst for an online stockbroker.

?They still fail most of the time, but just a little less than everybody else. That?s the main thing that I teach the kids ? that it?s really unpredictable.?

Lowery has his own parable about the randomness of show biz, regarding a little track on Cracker?s fourth album called ?The World is ?Mine.?

The band enjoyed playing it live, he says, and that was about it. But recently an advertising executive stumbled across the cut, and decided to feature it in a new Gillette commercial: ?Suddenly that song is making more money for us than 90 percent of our catalog,? he says.

The Richmond, Va.-based Lowery wrote and recorded ?La Costa Perdida,? the whimsical new California-themed comeback (with songs such as ?Too High for the Love-In?) in his old Bay Area stomping grounds for a real West Coast feel.

Even though his outlook regarding success is bleak, the musician continues to make albums, he says, ?because you have to ? you have to keep playing the lottery. Then the higher the chances are that somehow, some song gets picked up in some weird way, and you make some money.?

Day 2: ab exercises

Day 3: Incline bicep curls, tricep dips, shoulders.

Day 1-chest: bench press, flyes, pushups
2-back: chinups, pullups, rows, shrugs
3-legs: squats, extensions, leg curls, lunges
4-shoulders: lateral raises, bent over lateral raises, DB presses

Do abs on days 1, 3, and 5

Also use heavier weight and only do 4-8 reps with about 10 sets for each muscle group. Remember, If you can do 8, add more weight. Feel free to E-mail or IM me.

PFT: 49ers lose WR Manningham to torn ACL

New England Patriots v Jacksonville JaguarsGetty Images

The Patriots have proven they need Stevan Ridley.

But he had to prove he could hang onto the ball first.

After coughing it up three times in his previous two games, Ridley kept a firm grip on his responsibilities last week against the Jaguars.

?That?s what we had to focus on, because of the couple turnovers we had, starting with myself,? Ridley said, via Michael Whitmer of the Boston Globe. ?We focused on that, and that?s what we have to do. When we carry the ball, we have to carry it back to our offense. We can?t turn it over, we can?t have fumbles.?

Ridley said extra attention was placed on ball security, both in practice and the film room. While they?ve pulled him from individual games (such as when Danny Woodhead replaced him during the 49ers game), they keep going back to him for a reason.

With 1,189 yards and 10 touchdowns, he?s clearly the most explosive threat they have in the backfield, and last week?s closer-than-expected win over the Jags was used to build him up. He got the ball on the first six rushing plays, proof that they believe in him, or that they want to.

?When you look at issues, whether it be ball security or pass protection or the ability to run the ball outside or whatever the issue may be, there is always a reason,? offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said. ?Our goal is to try to give the player enough resources and enough instruction that he might be able to effectively improve that situation, that issue, if it exists.?

It clearly exists, but they?re clearly choosing to work through the issue rather than just putting him in the doghouse.

Newly Released Neo Geo X Gold Handheld Hacked - Custom ...

Newly-Released-Neo-Geo-X-Gold-Handheld-Hacked-Custom-Game-ROM-Selection-Now-PossibleDespite only being available for a week, the newly released Neo Geo X Gold handheld console has been hacked. The previously bundled-with-20-games system can now be modified to read any Neo Geo ROMs of your choice - allowing the likes of the entire Metal Slug & King Of Fighters series to be enjoyed on the device early.

To be fair, this is something we all expected to happen, but maybe not quite as quick as it did. Daring early adopters of the new SNK system have opened up the device to find a somewhat unsecured method of storing the selection of games on offer; a removable MicroSD card on the motherboard instead of on-board memory.

By taking this unsecured and questionably placed storage card out of its reader, you'll be able to take a look at the handheld's contents, including the game ROMs. To play additional games not included with the device, you'll need to rename the ROM of your choice to that of one found on the device already - tricking they system into booting it up from the system's menu.

Predicting the Future of Teaching | HalalTec - ligugen's Space

Dec 23, 2012

There is a mountain of speculation and debate about what school and learning will look like in the near future. Will education be online? Individualized? Self-paced? Flipped? Hybridized? Maybe even completely irrelevant? Rarely, however, is much speculation given to the role of the educator in the future of learning. All people seem to want to know is whether lectures are better recorded or in person or if educators at every level are giving students enough real world skills to be successful in the global economy. In reality, however, the radical changes in technology and the increasing demands on teachers are going to fundamentally change the very act of teaching. What will the educator of the future look like? How will the job description and qualifications change? And what effect will all of that have on students?

The Future of Learning

An October, 2012 video released by telecom company Ericsson presents a survey of educational experts and entrepreneurs speculating about the future of education. This promotional video for the company relies heavily on Knewton and Coursera as the models for the kinds of adaptive, individualized technology that will drive learning in the future.

The focus of the video is the ability of these technologies to track minute user data and facilitate intimately individualized instruction based on that data, including student learning preference, peak performance times, prior knowledge, and a host of other information. Even so, teaching and the role of the instructor was largely missing from this conversation about the techno-facilitated future of education.? One rather vague reference to the role of the educator was attributed to Coursera CEO Daphne Koller in an article accompanying the piece on GIGAOM:

?Coursera?s Koller says one of the revolutions in education is that teaching will be less about conveying information and more of a return to its original roots where instructors engage in dialogue, develop critical thinking skills and spark passion about a discipline.? (23 Oct., 2012)

The Role of the Educator on an Individualized World?

The Koller quote indicates that teaching will take a step backward (historically) with the implementation of these new technologies. Pretty far back, to the time of Plato, in fact, where the teaching and learning process was more about interpersonal interaction and fostering the individual ability to critically apply knowledge and cultivate individual passions for learning. While that is a wonderful plan, it is nearly impossible to imagine a way in which it could happen in a world where a factory model of education still dominates and teachers are overwhelmed with dozens of students in a single class. Plato never had 30 students following him around all attempting to interact at the same time. Given the reality of our education system, here are some more realistic roles for instructors in the world of high-tech education:

  • Facilitator/Learning Manager: If instructional materials really become individualized to the extent that the video describes, there will need to be someone present to help students navigate the technical aspects of performing the work that the system pushes to them. Additionally, the instructor will have a role in keeping students on task, and in providing support when learners fail to reach the standards pre-programmed into the adaptive learning system. There may also be an increased role in making sure that each student is completing their own work, rather than the work of peers.
  • Remediator: When students fail to achieve the learning objectives outlined by the automated system, the instructor will need to step in to troubleshoot the learning disconnect and either provide alternative instruction or adjust the learning system through some sort of control interface.
  • Enricher: Playing off the flipped classroom model, the teacher?s role could shift to providing enrichment activities beyond the scope of the automated system. If adaptive content is provided that helps students master basic concepts and learn background information, teachers can focus on helping students use the information that they have gained in authentic ways to help turn it into knowledge.
  • Collaborator/Mentor: One intriguing possibility in a technology-facilitated education future is for teachers to serve as collaborators and mentors with students engaging in real world, possibly entrepreneurial, activities. Such activities would help students develop actual marketable skills and could potentially provide a new and much needed revenue stream for schools and universities.
  • Content Creator: One role that teachers already have ?unless their curriculum is standardized- is that of content creator. This is actually one of the most important functions that educators at all levels perform, and one for which they are well trained. Add to these qualifications the fact that they actually know their students, their strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities, and educators could become a valuable resource to be employed to help bolster the content in these adaptive systems. This serves the additional purpose of de-centralizing the curriculum so that a diverse set of perspectives and ideas can be assured.
  • N/A: It is possible, though fairly far-fetched, that the further refinement of these adaptive learning systems will make educators obsolete. The Internet is rapidly becoming a repository for all human knowledge (information), and there is potential for these systems to become sophisticated enough to take existing content and reformulate it to create new learning opportunities. This is a frightening possibility that seems awfully close to the scenario that serves as the backdrop for the Terminator movies though.

While it is exciting to think about the rich possibilities that these new technologies could provide for students and the potential they have for liberating teachers from much of the routine, standardized content that all students must master in order to be successful. It is important to remember that true learning happens in context and through a socially mediated process of meaning making.? No technology can accomplish that (yet?), so we will need to keep teachers around to provide the most important aspect of education ? the human touch.

Christmas brings fear of church bombs in Nigeria

MADALLA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Kneeling over a dusty grave on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital, 16-year old Hope Ehiawaguan says a prayer, lays down flowers and tearfully tells her brother she loves him.

He was one of 44 killed on Christmas Day last year when a member of Islamist sect Boko Haram rammed a car packed with explosives into the gates of St Theresa's Church in Madalla, a satellite town 25 miles from the center of Abuja.

Boko Haram has killed hundreds in its campaign to impose sharia law in northern Nigeria and is the biggest threat to stability in Africa's top oil exporter.

Two other churches were bombed that day and on Christmas Eve 2010 over 40 people were killed in similar attacks.

This Christmas, the police and military are expecting more trouble in the north. They've ordered security to be tightened, people's movement restricted and churches to be guarded.

But such is the commitment to religion in a country with Africa's largest Christian population that millions of people will pack out thousands of churches in the coming days. It is impossible to protect everyone, security experts say.

"I feel safe," Ehiawaguan says with uncertainty, when asked if she will come to church on December 25 this year.

"Not because of security here ... because we have a greater security in heaven," she says, wiping away her tears.

The blast in Madalla killed several people on the street and pulled down the church roof, condemning many of those trapped inside the burning building, including a 7-month old boy.

A plaque listing the names of the members of the church who were killed has been placed above their graves. The twisted metal of the cars destroyed in the blast is still there.

"I only pray to God to give them a heart," Ehiawaguan says, when asked about her brother's killers.

Security experts believe Boko Haram is targeting worshippers to spark a religious conflict in a country of 160 million people split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims.

SECTARIAN THREAT

The sect has also targeted Mosques in the past and assassinated Imams who have questioned its insurgency. In the group's stronghold in the northeast, where most of its attacks occur, Muslims are equally at threat as Christians.

The fear for many is that more Christmas Day attacks could spark the sort of tit-for-tat sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and largely Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

"We have always insisted that Christians should not retaliate," said Sam Kraakevik Kujiyat, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, one of the areas worst hit by inter-religious violence in recent years.

"But there is fear ... we know not everyone who says he is a Christian acts like one."

Churches were emptier than usual on Sunday in northern cities of Kano and Kaduna, local residents said.

Despite bolstered security in cities across the north, dual suicide bombers attacked the offices of mobile phone operators India's Airtel and South Africa's MTN in Nigeria's second-largest city Kano on Saturday.

The bombers died but no civilians were killed.

No one took responsibility for the attacks but Boko Haram has targeted phone firms before because they say the companies help the security forces catch their members.

At least 2,800 people have died in fighting in the largely Muslim north since Boko Haram launched an uprising against the government in 2009, watchdog Human Rights Watch says.

Boko Haram has showed since its insurgency intensified more than two years ago that it can find weaknesses in defenses.

"One faction of Boko Haram has made several attempts to provoke violence between Christians and Muslims," said Peter Sharwood Smith, Nigeria head of security firm Drum Cussac.

"Unfortunately, I think it is very possible we may see attacks of this type (Church bombings) again."

Boko Haram is not the only threat in northern Nigeria.

Islamist Group called Ansaru, known to have ties with Boko Haram, has risen in prominence in recent weeks. It claimed an attack on a major police barracks in Abuja last month, where it said hundreds of prisoners were released.

The group said on Saturday that it was behind the kidnapping of a French national last week and it has been labeled a "terrorist group" by Britain.

Recipe: Pickled herrings with creme fraiche and ... - Sammy & Bella

Firstly, a big thank you to New Idea mag for publishing our delicious Polish Christmas recipes this week! If you haven?t already, make sure you pick up a copy of this week?s New Idea.

Pickled herrings, also known as soused herrings or rollmops, have been a Baltic favourite since 3000 BC.? Poles, Germans, Russians, Scandinavians and of course the vikings have long survived harsh winters on these little fish, which are preserved through curing then marinating in vinegar. The icy cold waters of the Baltic sea make them rich in natural fats, especially omega 3 which is essential for healthy brain function and has important anti cancer properties.

In Poland they are eaten year round, but are especially important on Christmas Eve, when they form an essential part of a 12-dish meal called wigilia. In this special religious meal, the dishes represent each of the 12 apostles and no meat is allowed. Classically we eat:

  1. Sledzie: pickled herrings
  2. Wedzone ryby: Smoked fish, especially salmon and mackerel. For the families who can afford it, some caviar is also served.
  3. Ryba w galarecie: Poached carp in aspic (which we have replaced with a big Aussie bowl of prawns in our family!)
  4. Salatka jarzynowa: Root vegetable salad with mayo
  5. Ryba po grecku: pan fried fish marinated with tomato and celeriac
  6. Grzyby marynowane: pickled wild mushrooms, especially yellow chantarelles and bolettes. In Australia, we pick wild mushrooms every April and pickle them ourselves J
  7. Barszcz: Beetroot broth
  8. Krokiety: crepes or vol au vent pastries stuffed with wild mushroom duxelle, served alongside the barszcz. Alternatively, uszka, a pasta filled with mushroom can be served inside the broth.
  9. Pierogi: dumplings stuffed with cheese and potato, or with sauerkraut
  10. Makowiec: a poppyseed brioche roulade cake
  11. Sernik: baked cheesecake
  12. Piernik: gingerbread cake with plum jam

Traditionally, pickled herrings are served with rye bread (which you can buy at Eastern European and Jewish delis) or potatoes and can be flavoured with onions, bay leaves, red capsicum, mustard, sour cream and dill.

A Polish meal always starts with zakaski, which is a pre-dinner snack not dissimilar to the Italian concept of antipasta. A traditional zakaski platter features herrings, hams, salami, pate, pickled cucumbers, breakfast radish, pickled mushrooms and rye bread ? all of which simply must be washed down with a shot of vodka. Some of our favourite Polish vodkas are Belvedere and Chopin. A special honey infused vodka called krupnik is also common, and we love drinking kompot, a non alcoholic (what?!?!) hot drink made by infusing dried fruits with spices such as cloves and cinnamon. To some Australians, it may seem strange to have shots of vodka before dinner has even started! It?s a very traditional way to say na zdrowie, or cheers, at the beginning of the meal and everyone over 18 simply must have one ? even 90 year old grandmas! With tonnes of food on offer, no one gets drunk off 1 shot.

This is one of our late grandmas ?babcia?s? recipes, and our favourite way to eat herrings. The flavour is quite strong but is mellowed by the sour cream and sweetened with apple, so it?s a great way to introduce the Australian palate to this new and interesting flavour. Let us know what you think!

Ingredients

300g packet or jar of pickled herrings

? granny smith apple

1 eschallot

2 Tbsp dill

4 Tbsp cr?me fraiche

salt and white pepper

rye bread and unsalted butter to serve

?

Method

  1. Rinse herrings in cold water then pat dry with a paper towel. Cut into 1cm slices.
  2. Finely chop the apple, eschallot and dill, then mix with herrings and cr?me fraiche. Season with salt and white pepper
  3. Serve chilled with some generously buttered rye bread.

Round Table: Let's Talk About Festive Gaming - Nintendo Life

It's all so jolly

Image owned by Pakkun96 (originally published on deviantART)

Image owned by Pakkun96 (originally published on deviantART)

Well, it's Christmas Eve, and as the famous song said we're "simmmmply haaaaving a wonderful Christmas time" here at Nintendo Life. With Santa currently loading up his sleigh with those rather weighty Wii U consoles for the good gamers of the World, a few members of the team decided to have a chat about festive memories and the current state of play for Wii U and 3DS.

Joining features editor Tom Whitehead are reviews editor Mike Mason, events correspondent Katy Ellis, news contributor Orla Madden, and our wonderfully bearded US reviewers Ron DelVillano and Morgan Sleeper. Grab a festively spiced hot drink and enjoy!

Tom: First up, please introduce yourselves to our lovely readers.

Katy: Hi there everyone! I'm Katy, Events Correspondent at Nintendo Life, but you'll probably know me best as the one who writes all the news articles about obscure Japanese games from time to time.

Ron: I'm Ron DelVillano, US based game reviewer and guy with a pretty big beard.

Morgan: Hey everybody! I'm Morgan, I write reviews here in the US and, like Ron, sport an impressive beard.

Tom: I'm features editor Tom and I also have a proper beard, making Katy the odd one out so far...

Mike: I'm Mike Mason, Reviews Editor and a complete and utter failure on the beard front.

Orla: Hi all! My name's Orla, the wee Irish lass who brings some of your daily dose of news. If Katy grows a beard first, then I will too!

Tom: First up, what's the first festive gaming memory that pops into your head?

Ron: My first festive gaming memory is always playing the newest N64 games with my cousin on Christmas morning. He had the console before me, so he always got the good games first!

Katy: A recent but excellent festive gaming memory of mine was opening my Wii for Christmas and spending all day playing Wii sports with my family - the first time they had ever really wanted to play video games with me. It was great being able to share my excitement for the new console with my family, but at the same time I wanted it to be Boxing Day so I could get underway playing Twilight Princess!

Morgan: My first gaming-related holiday memory was unwrapping my beautiful silver Game Boy Pocket on Christmas morning - my first system! It came with Super Mario Land, and after jumping up and down for a while, my cousin and I sat on the stairs all day, passing back and forth and playing as far as we could. Just hearing the level 1-1 music from that game takes me back to the holidays every time!

Mike: The best time that I recall is when I got a SEGA Mega Drive as a child. I wanted one desperately for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but when the gifts were all said and done there was no console sitting under my tree. I was fine with it ? I had other things to play with! ? but then my parents pulled off the trick of a lifetime by producing a final treat from behind the sofa. I proceeded to act like the legendary Nintendo 64 kid and went into a Sonic-fuelled haze for a while.

Orla: My first festive gaming memory goes as far back as opening my brand new SNES in 1995 on Christmas Day. Super Mario World came packaged with the console, so I played with my dad for the whole day.

Tom: My memory isn't particularly vivid, as many of my early systems arrived on birthdays, but I do remember getting Sonic 3 on Mega Drive for Christmas, and that was a special game.

A lot of love for MD across the NL network

A lot of love for MD across the NL network

So, has gaming been a big part of your Christmas routine from an early age?

Mike: Gaming doesn't actually play much of a role during Christmas for me, unless you count guessing what time dad'll fall asleep as a game. However, I do tend to get games as presents!

Katy: I guess gaming has always played a large role as there has always been that one big title or console that I've been dying to get my hands on for Christmas, but it wasn't until the Wii that gaming really became a family Christmas affair.

Orla: For me it has been. It's the only time of the year where I get enough time to play games all day, and the past couple of years have seen big names being released. I spent all of Christmas last year with Skyward Sword, and the previous year with Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Morgan: Definitely - I very happily unwrapped a game or two most Christmases, and the post-Christmas lunch food-coma has always been the best time to sit down with family and test them out. But more recently, my sister and I have started a tradition of playing Christmas NiGHTS each year on the big day, and that's been my favourite gaming ritual yet!

Ron: Like I said, I've always spent a lot of time gaming with my cousins, so we've always connected over that, especially on the holidays.

Morgan: Same here Ron, I spent many happy holidays locked in gaming marathons with my cousin. Finishing Bangai-O one year is something I'll never forget!

Tom: What about in the past five years, are there stand-out gifts or memories in recent times?

Morgan: For me, getting The Beatles: Rock Band was a huge holiday highlight. My whole family rocked through the game in one sitting!

Katy: Ahh yes, Rock Band was a biggie a few years back with my family.

Orla: Guitar Hero 5 for me! My sister actually joined in on the action with me (she got me the present), and she's not a big gamer like I am.

If you were cool and had plenty of cash, this was the version to get

If you were cool and had plenty of cash, this was the version to get

Ron: To be honest, as I've gotten older I tend to just buy games whenever I want them, which is usually on launch day, so I've kind of deprived myself of that fresh Christmas surprise experience as far as gaming goes.

Mike: Nothing that's stood out hugely, though last year I did get Super Mario 3D Land which was just lovely.

Tom: I'm in the same boat as Ron, but I normally have one game that I request from the family for Xmas. It's a great time of year to catch up on multiplayer games (Mario Kart Wii is an old favourite), so this year I'm hoping for some Nintendo Land fun.

Ron: I'm much more of a solo gamer. I love playing with others, but my immediate family isn't too into it.

Katy: I think I'm the same as Ron - Wii Sports is about as far as my family will go. But in honesty, I prefer playing alone - especially when it?s a deep time-consuming adventure game.

Tom: Do any of you think Wii U is struggling to get the family around the TV like Wii Sports?

Orla: I'm trying to persuade my family to try out the Wii U with me over Christmas, I haven't been lucky enough to try multiplayer in Nintendo Land!

Ron: I don't think my family really knows what Wii U is, as much as I've tried to explain and show it to them! They might be more interested when Wii Fit U finally comes out, but until then I'll be flying solo.

Morgan: Not around here - Wii Tennis was always a fun thing to pop in to show off the system, but we never really got into it in a big way; Nintendo Land is already a huge hit though. Everyone wants to play Mario Chase when they get home!

Mike: I've not had the chance to try it with family yet, but it's gone down very well with my friends so far. I think, if anything, I might find it easier to get the family involved this year without the leaping about of Wii Sports.

Katy: I've only just got back home for Christmas, but since I've been back my 26 year old sister and I have been playing quite a bit of Nintendo Land - she seems to be really enjoying it, especially the Pikmin and Animal Crossing mini-games, which is a huge improvement seeing as the only game she has ever been interested in before was Just Dance!

Tom: I'm yet to test Nintendo Land on the family to a great degree, so will be curious to see how they react.

In terms of festive gaming, which system currently takes up most of your time. You can be honest, doesn't have to be Nintendo!

We sure like our handhelds

We sure like our handhelds

Ron: Netflix! But seriously, I love my 3DS so damn much. I bring it everywhere, and I play it daily. I'll definitely be taking it with me on Christmas day when I travel from one family's house to the other.

Morgan: I'm on the road right now, so it's been the 3DS all the way. In fact, like Ron that's what I'd be playing even if I was at home! I finally saw the end credits in Style Savvy, have recently rediscovered the Denpa Men, and the latest Layton is perfect for fireside yuletide gaming. But when I get home on Christmas day, I'll have to put it down for the Saturn, of course!

Tom: I'll be jumping between 3DS and Wii U, but there will be Steam sales, so the PC may take a hammering.

Ron: Ugh. I'll be watching the Steam sales too. I really want to grab The Walking Dead.

Katy: At the moment I'm all about my PS3, so many great games out this year and even more to come! I've got a copy of Far Cry 3 on the way too now, so I presume that will take up most of my time this year. Although I agree with Morgan and Ron, my 3DS also gets a lot of use all year round!

Orla: For me right now it's all about the Wii U and PS3. I'm focusing on completing NSMBU on the Wii U, and Assassin's Creed 3 on the PS3. I have such a PS3 backlog right now that Christmas is the perfect time of the year to spend some quality gaming time.

Mike: No particular system. I use it as a time to clear out backlog, so it can be Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 3, 3DS... newcomers Wii U and PS Vita will no doubt play a role this year! And I got a better PC this year too, so Steam as well.

On the next page we talk about the state of play of both 3DS and Wii U, as well as some other less serious topics?

Deep emotions run beneath Russia's adoption ban

The Duma's bill to ban US adoptions of Russian children, which passed another legislative hurdle today, appeals to Russian pride and concerns about the US.

By Mike Eckel,?Correspondent / December 22, 2012

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks during a news conference in Moscow, Russia, Thursday. Putin says a draft bill banning US adoptions of Russian children is a legitimate response to a new US law that calls for sanctions on Russians deemed to be human rights violators.

You usually can judge Vladimir Putin?s dislike of a reporter's question by the intensity of his expression. Such was the case this week at his annual news conference, when he greeted with a hard scowl the subject of pending Russian legislation that would ban Americans from adopting orphaned children. Mr. Putin unleashed invective on the fact that consular representatives aren?t allowed to visit adopted Russian children in the United States.

?I believe that is unacceptable. Do you think this is normal? How can it be normal when you are humiliated? Do you like it? Are you a sadomasochist or something? They shouldn?t humiliate our country,? he told reporters in Moscow.

As is often the case in Russia, there is the issue of what is going on versus what is really going on. And as is often the case in Russia, it?s complicated.

There is very little doubt as to the goal of the legislation, which passed its third and final reading in the lower house of parliament Friday and must still be signed by Putin. The bill is named after Dima Yakovlev, the toddler who died of heat stroke in 2007 after his adopted father forgot him in a locked car in Virginia for nine hours. The father, Miles Harrison, was acquitted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Dima, whose adopted name was Chase. His acquittal in 2008 sparked banner newspaper headlines, incendiary TV news reports, and howls of outrage in Russia.

Lawmakers in the State Duma made it clear that today's legislation is a direct response to the US ?Magnitsky Act,? a law designed to sanction a particular group of Russian officials connected to the death of a whistle-blowing lawyer in a Moscow prison.

In other words, a law designed to punish people tied to a lawyer?s prison death has been answered with a law to prevent people from adopting orphaned children, many of whom have have developmental or other disabilities and will otherwise end up living much of their lives in orphanages that often resemble state mental hospitals of a bygone era.

Adoption is a searingly emotional issue for Russians, and one easily manipulated by the Kremlin. The institution of adoption is relatively uncommon in Russia, for cultural and other reasons. And judging by headlines in the Moscow tabloids, and the rhetoric of some state lawmakers, you?d think that Americans adopt Russian children to eat them.
