Sports Report for Wednesday, 8-17-11

The City of Laurens & the parks and recreation Division want to remind you that time is running out to register for football & cheerleading? The football deadline is today and the cheerleading is Friday.. In pro baseball, the Greenville Drive lost another 1 run game as they were defeated by the Rome Braves 3-2 last night up @ Flour Field.. The Drive will finish their current series with the Braves tonight @ 7:05.?

As for the Atlanta Braves, it took them 11 innings but they pulled out another 1 run victory as they defeated the Giants 2-1 last night down at the Ted? Martin Prado collected his only hit of the evening a 2 out single driving in Brooks Conrad..? With the win, the Braves push their lead in the N.L. wildcard race to 6 games over the Giants.. Same 2 teams will square off tonight in game 3 of a 4 game series.?

Turning now to action last Saturday night @ the Laurens County Speedway, in the crash filled Coca-Cola Super late Model division Frankie Coates survived to take the checkered flag with Mike Measamer & Billy Rushton rounding out the top 3? In the Hobby Division main event Phillip Wilson held off Dan Lawson to take the win? Tim Tollison finished 3rd?. ?The Super Stock 4 was won by J.R. Baker who had the pole and briefly lost the lead to Tim Tollison before regaining it? Henry Vaughn finished 2nd with Tollison taking 3rd? In the Limited main event, Brad Rachels lead from start to finish and was followed by Mac Owens & David Stone taking the next 2 spots? In the Dwarf, B.J. Cochcroft took the win followed by Isaac Lothridge and Don Beard.?

University of South Carolina outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr came to terms with the Boston Red Soxs and will not return to the Gamecocks next year? All-America pitchers Matt Price and Michael Roth as well as outfielder Adam Matthews and left-handed pitcher Tyler Webb will return to the South Carolina baseball program as the deadline to sign professional contracts passed at Midnight on Monday evening/Tuesday morning?. Clemson shortstop and ACC Player-of-the-Year Brad Miller also came to terms with the Seattle Mariners and forgo his senior year with the Tigers.?

The Clinton Red Devils finished their scrimmage with a good showing against Rock Hill last night @ Wilder Stadium.. Red Devil play-by-play announcer Buddy Bridges said they looked must sharper than last Friday nights jamboree? ?They played with more enthusiasm? stated Bridges? Neil Lee had at least 2 passing TDs and Clinton scored on several sustained drives..? Clinton High will have a Fan day tomorrow where fans will have a chance to meet all the fall sports athletes and coaches.?

And finally, if you plan on seeing the Panthers training up @ Wofford you better get going as today is the last day.?
