This unique cat breed is identifiable by its folded ears. The Scottish Fold cat breed has a natural gene mutation that causes its ears to be folded forward. They have a medium-sized, rounded body with a medium to long, dense and plush coat. These cats were originally called lop-eared, or lops, after the lop-eared rabbit but gained their name in 1966.
The Scottish Fold breed originated in 1961 when a white barn cat was found in Scotland with folded ears. This cat later had kittens, also with folded ears, after which time a breeding program was created to propagate the breed. Interestingly enough, Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears and they will typically fold in about three weeks after birth.
These cats have become widely popular as pets because of their unique appearance, and also because they are reputed to be very loving companions.
The Scottish Fold breed is usually very good-natured and gets along with other pets in the household. They can become very attached and affectionate with their owners. They are playful and loyal house cats. Another unusual trait about the Scottish Fold is that they are known to sleep on their backs and also sit in the ?Buddha Position?.
While a healthy Scottish Fold cat can live up to around 15 years, they are prone to certain health conditions. This breed of cat is at risk for polycystic kidney disease which is a condition that causes cysts to form in the kidneys and could lead to kidney failure. They are also at risk for cardiomyopathy which is a heart condition that reduces the heart?s efficiency of blood circulation throughout the body.
Like any cat or house pet, the Scottish Fold cat is prone to every day hazards and accidents as well.
Because of their risk for unexpected accidents and illnesses, pet insurance is recommended. By searching the internet and doing a simple pet insurance comparison, the cat?s owner can determine which type of plan and policy is best for their situation.
Preparing the home with proper food, toys, cat-proofing, and pet insurance will ensure that the new Scottish Fold house cat will live a long and happy life.
