iPad Air still coveted by Chinese consumers, despite rise of Android tablets

Android tablets may be on the rise in China, but that hasn't stopped Beijing resident Fu Zheng from buying Apple's latest iPad product. He was among the first to get his hands on the device on Friday when Apple launched the iPad Air at one of its local stores in the city.

"Everyone thinks Apple products are good," said Fu, who also own's the third and fourth generation iPads.

Apple still remains the leading tablet vendor in China, but increasingly more consumers in the country are buying Android tablets. In this year's second quarter, Apple's tablet shipments to the Chinese market fell to a 28 percent market share, while competing products from Samsung Electronics, Lenovo and little-known "whitebox" vendors saw shipments increase, according to research firm IDC.

Apple's China tablets shipments will pick up with the arrival of the iPad Air, and the iPad mini, slated to arrive later this month, said IDC analyst Dickie Chang. "We think Chinese customers will have a positive response to the iPad Air," he said, pointing to the tablet's light weight, thinner design, and improved performance.

But in China, Android tablets will continue to eat away at Apple's market share over time, he added. "Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Sony, Samsung, all these vendors are providing Android solutions," he said. "Apple's products I think have good performance and the quality is good, but the price is still different. There are now Android tablets at $100, $150."

In China, Apple's iPad Air starts at 3588 yuan (US$585). But on Friday, customers waiting outside the Apple store in Beijing's Sanlitun district were eager to buy the product, despite its higher price over Android tablets.

"I've bought Android products before," said a 20-year-old, with the surname Li, who waited in line. "But I think I want to buy a tablet with higher quality," he added, referring to the iPad Air.

About 50 people waited in line before the Apple store opened at 8 a.m. on Friday. In the past, newly launched products from the company have attracted massive crowds of hundreds when first day of sales started. But since July last year, Apple has implemented a reservation system at its Chinese stores to cut down on lines and prevent customer skirmishes from erupting.

"It was easy to make a reservation," said Fan Huajie, who wanted to upgrade to the latest Apple tablet. "I have all of their iPads," he added.

Where Monsters Come From, or Bad Paleontology

Where Monsters Come From, or Bad Paleontology

Ancient myths of dragons, titans, and giants—inhuman creatures battling it out on an alien earth before mankind—are easy enough to find. Seemingly every culture has them. What's perhaps more surprising is that many of these tales of deformed and monstrous beings, whether terrifying dragons or beneficent heroes armed for battle, often resulted from a misunderstanding of the fossil record.

Asia stocks muted on prospect Fed to trim stimulus

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Asian stocks markets were muted Friday as investors continued to fret that the U.S. Federal Reserve bank will begin cutting its stimulus as soon as January.

Japan's Nikkei 225, the regional heavyweight, fell 1.2 percent to 14,155.81, weighed down by Sony Corp. stocks losing 12 percent after the electronics and entertainment giant reported a 19.3 billion yen ($196 million) quarterly loss.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 0.1 percent at 23,190.05 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.2 percent to 5,418.10. Markets in Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia also fell. Seoul's Kospi added 0.3 percent to 2,035.95.

India's Sensex index reached an all-time high of 21,234.35, up 0.3 percent, led by information technology, auto and pharmaceutical stocks.

Worries about future moves in U.S. monetary policy tamped down most Asian stock markets Friday. The Fed's announcement this week that it would maintain its $85 billion monthly bond purchasing scheme was widely expected.

But the bank's economic outlook was rosier than anticipated and could indicate that it will begin to reduce those purchases soon, which have been aimed at keeping interest rates low to support economic recovery. The U.S. central bank's cheap money policy has underpinned stock markets worldwide for several years

The Fed no longer expressed concern, as it did in September, that higher mortgage rates could hold back hiring and economic growth. And its statement made no reference to the 16-day government shutdown, which economists say slowed growth this quarter. Some analysts said that suggests reduction of the stimulus could begin early next year.

On Wall Street, The Dow lost 73.01 points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 15,545.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 6.77 points, 0.4 percent, to 1,756.54.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 10.91 points, or 0.3 percent, to 3,919.71.

Benchmark U.S. crude for December delivery was down 2 cents at $96.36 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 39 cents to close $96.38 on Thursday.

In currency trading, the euro was down at $1.3555 from $1.3586 late Thursday. The dollar fell to 97.92 yen from 98.31 yen.

Google, Samsung and others sued by acquirer of Nortel patents Rockstar

The Rockstar Consortium that acquired Nortel Networks' patents filed Thursday patent infringement suits against Google, Samsung, HTC and five other companies.

In a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, Rockstar and subsidiary NetStar Technologies have alleged that Google has infringed seven of the patents acquired from Nortel.

The patents, all titled "Associative Search Engine," relate to an invention used to provide advertisements based on users' search terms.

Backed by Microsoft, Apple, RIM, Ericsson and Sony, Rockstar acquired Nortel's patents for US$4.5 billion after outbidding Google in 2011.

Google later acquired Motorola Mobility last year for $12.5 billion, in a deal that aimed at ownership of Motorola's patent portfolio.

The search giant was aware of the patents-in-suit at the time of the auction, Rockstar of Ottawa, Canada, said in its complaint. "Despite losing in its attempt to acquire the patents-in-suit at auction, Google has infringed and continues to infringe the patents-in-suit."

The complaint, which asks for past and future damages arising out of Google's infringement, demands a trial by jury on all issues. Google could not be immediately reached for comment.

Rockstar and another subsidiary MobileStar Technologies have also filed a complaint against Samsung Electronics for infringement of seven other patents, including U.S. Patent No. 6,037,937 ("the '937 patent") entitled "Navigation Tool for Graphical User Interface."

Samsung Mobile Communication devices that have an operating system configured "to support Gallery, Email, Maps and Browser functionality," allegedly infringe claims of the '937 patent, according to the complaint. Samsung's Mobile Hotspot feature which allows sharing of a mobile device's data connection with other devices by turning it into a wireless access point is also alleged to infringe claims of U.S. Patent No. 6,128,298 ("the '298 patent") entitled "Internet Protocol Filter."

Rockstar has sued HTC for alleged infringement of the same seven patents that figure in the complaint against Samsung, while Asustek Computer is alleged to have infringed six of the patents.

More Foreign Firms Look To Make It In The USA

When many Americans hear the word "globalization," they think: "jobs going overseas."

And sometimes it does mean just that.

But as globalization knits nations closer together, foreign companies increasingly are creating jobs in the United States, not luring them away. Despite the Great Recession, slow recovery and political dysfunction in Washington, the United States remains a top destination for the world's wealth.

Overseas investors have U.S. assets totaling nearly $4 trillion, including auto plants, banks, mines and more. U.S. affiliates of foreign companies employ about 5.6 million people in this country.

On Thursday, President Obama highlighted those investments, and urged foreign business leaders — packed into a Washington, D.C., hotel ballroom — to build more plants and offices in this country.

"There is no better place in the world to do business," Obama said.

The administration welcomed 1,200 participants from roughly 60 countries, and urged them to learn more about an initiative called SelectUSA. Under the program, the U.S. State Department works closely with the Commerce Department to help foreign companies set up shop here.

U.S. ambassadors in 32 countries will now add "economic development" to their list of chores, according to the Commerce Department. The goal is to have local, state and federal officials in all departments working together to smooth the way for foreign direct investments.

Obama told the foreign guests "when you bet on America, that bet pays off," thanks to this country's many economic advantages, including cheap energy, an educated workforce, intellectual-property protections, a sophisticated financial system and much more.

"There are a whole lot of reasons you ought to come here," he said. "We are the land of opportunity. That is not a myth; it's a proven fact. "

U.S. business leaders who spoke at the gathering raised concerns about this country's ability to continue to be attractive to investors. For example, Larry Fink, CEO of BlackRock, a global investment management firm based in New York City, said he has become "alarmed" by Washington's political dysfunction, which he says unnerved many foreign investors.

Speaking on a panel about investing opportunities, Fink said that when some Republican lawmakers used the U.S. debt ceiling deadline as a lever to try to win concessions a couple of weeks ago, they endangered the country's status as a stable place to invest.

"I am very bullish about America," he said. But "it's important that we drop the conversation about default," he added.

Despite any reputational harm done by the October government shutdown and debt-ceiling threat, foreign executives didn't seem deterred about investing in the United States.

"It's very easy to do business here," said Leonardo Figueiro, vice president of the WTC Business Club in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He says that in Brazil, he faces "lots of costs and bureaucracy."

But in the United States, people want to close on real estate deals and open clubs. "We always want to do business in this market," he said. "We built a building in Miami, and now we're looking forward to investing more."

That upbeat assessment could be heard again and again among the foreigners visiting the exhibit booths set up by cities and states.

At the Ohio booth, representatives handed out chocolates shaped like buckeye nuts. At the Carmel, Ind., booth, a large sign made sure visitors knew more about "A City to Experience." Many guests were impressed with the pitches.

"The United States is definitely the leading economy in the world — it's the most stable and progressive," said Hiten Parekh, CEO for the Americas operations of Waaree Energies Ltd., based in India. "This is the No. 1 country in the world for investing."

Blair King, an economic development manager for Alabama Power Co., stood in his state's booth, talking up business opportunities. He said foreigners are impressed with U.S. energy abundance.

When it comes to electric power, "they want to know what it costs," he said. And they often find it's cheaper here, he said.

Speakers at the two-day gathering include Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker and Secretary of State John Kerry. Top executives from Wal-Mart, Caterpillar, Dow Chemical and other U.S.-based companies are participating in panel discussions that end Friday.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — NBC says it's ordering 13 episodes of a new comedy created by Tina Fey and starring Ellie Kemper of "The Office."

The network says Kemper will play a woman who flees a doomsday cult and begins a new life in New York city. The actress had joined "The Office" as Erin the receptionist in the show's 2009 season.

NBC says Fey created the new series with Robert Carlock, who was an executive producer on her Emmy-winning series "30 Rock." The pair will join in writing the new comedy and serve as executive producers along with David Miner.

NBC says the new show, as yet untitled, is scheduled to debut in fall 2014.
