Apache plans $1.5 billion Egypt investments in 2012 (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? American oil and gas company Apache Corp (APA.N) plans to increase investments in its Egypt operations by $1.5 billion starting in 2012, Egypt's General Authority for Free-zones and Investments (GAFI) said on Saturday.

This is one of the biggest expansion operations for foreign investments in Egypt since a popular uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak in January and left the economy floundering, deterring investments amid political instability.

Apache has operations in the United States, Canada, Egypt, the United Kingdom North Sea, Australia and Argentina.

Coca-Cola Co (KO.N) has also said, according to a GAFI statement, that it plans to double its investments in Egypt by $200 million in 2012.

The company said it will expand its factories in Egypt to become a major regional production center.

Foreign direct investment dropped from $6.2 bln in the 2009/2010 financial year ending in June to $2.1 bln in 2010/2011.

'Shrek' spinoff 'Puss in Boots' tops box office

NEW YORK (AP) ? The "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" landed on all fours, opening with an estimated $34 million to lead the box office.

The DreamWorks 3-D animated film, distributed by Paramount Pictures, proved the popular character voiced by Antonio Banderas was a big enough draw outside the "Shrek" franchise.

The PG-rated "Puss in Boots" scored with family audiences on the weekend before Halloween, and also drew a large Hispanic crowd, which made up 35 percent of its audience.

Though the box office for the top 12 movies was up 7.8 percent from the corresponding weekend last year, it was still affected by both the unseasonable winter storm on the East Coast and the appeal of the Game 7 broadcast of baseball's World Series on Friday night. DreamWorks estimated the storm took off several million from "Puss in Boots."

The new release on the weekend from 20th Century Fox, the Justin Timberlake sci-fi thriller "In Time," was down as much as 20 percent Saturday in markets like New York and Philadelphia.

But the largest estimated opening didn't happen in North America. "The Adventures of Tintin," which is being distributed overseas by Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures, opened in 19 international markets and hauled in $55.8 million.

The performance-capture 3-D animated film, directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from the beloved Belgian comic series, was especially popular in France, where its $21.5 million was the largest opening for a non-sequel Hollywood film. The film opens in the U.S. on Dec. 21.

"We're still waiting for the holiday season to kick in in earnest as we get into November," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "The holiday season is going to be very strong at the box office."

Paramount also claimed the weekend's second top performing movie with the low-budget horror film "Paranormal Activity 3." That film took in $18.5 million in its second week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $81.3 million. Paramount's "Footloose" was the fourth film on the weekend, adding $5.4 million for a three-week total of $38.4 million.

"In Time" opened with $12 million domestically but took in more ($14.5 million) overseas.

The biggest disappointment was "The Rum Diary," the Hunter S. Thompson adaption starring Johnny Depp. It opened weakly, earning just $5 million, a low figure for a film headlined by Depp and which cost an estimated $50 million to make.

But the solid opening for "Puss in Boots" was much needed for DreamWorks. The company said Tuesday its net income fell by half in the third quarter as its early summer release, "Kung Fu Panda 2," did not haul in as much at the box office as last year's "Shrek Forever After."

Reviews and audience reaction have been positive for "Puss in Boots." Its release date was moved up a week to essentially give the film more time to run in theaters before other large fall movies are released. It added $17 million internationally, with most of that coming from Russia.

"We always looked at this as a two-weekend release strategy, so we think we've got a good start on that plan," said Anne Globe, head of worldwide marketing and consumer products at DreamWorks. "Being the number one movie and the likely Halloween weekend record-breaker, we're well-positioned to go into week two as well as play through the holidays."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Puss in Boots," $34 million. ($17 million international.)

2. "Paranormal Activity 3," $18.5 million. ($17 million international.)

3. "In Time," $12 million. ($14.5 million international.)

Wall Street Week Ahead: Have you heard? Buy the dip (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? With the S&P 500 about to end its best month in almost 40 years, many would be happy to cash in gains and start packing for the ski slopes.

But some underperforming investors are being cornered into putting yet more money into U.S. stocks.

The S&P 500 on Friday closed its fourth week of gains and is up more than 13 percent in October alone. But many, including hedge funds, were caught wrong-footed by the rally.

Even though some pullback may be expected next week, the clearer picture after the European deal "should give a green light for many of the funds to get back in risk assets," according to Robert Francello, head trader at hedge fund Apex Capital, which manages about $2 billion in San Francisco.

"Hopefully we'll be able to see some further gains into the year end," he said.

Hedge funds, among the equity market's power players, are on average sitting on losses of 8 percent for the year according to Hedge Fund Research. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is up for the year, if only a bit more than 2 percent.

A JPMorgan note to clients following Thursday's 3 percent rally on the U.S. benchmark index argues for a "strong foundation for an equity rally into year end," with a 1,400-1,475 target.

That's more than the 8 percent gain hedge funds would need to come out of the red for the year.

"If you're a hedge fund manager and you want to put money to work it feels like it has to be on the long side: buying stocks, buying risky assets," said Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at the ConvergEx Group in New York.

"For the moment, you've taken away major risk in Europe and you've replaced it with a potential positive in stock valuations and no double-dip."

European leaders reached a long-awaited agreement to boost the region's bailout fund and struck a deal with banks and insurers who will take a 50 percent loss on their Greek bonds.

A more disorderly default from Greece, and the possibility of sovereign defaults spreading in Europe, were part of the reason the S&P 500 closed its worst quarter since 2008 in September.

The market was also relieved after data earlier this week showed the U.S. economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the third quarter.

A heavy flow of job market data, capped on Friday by the government's monthly report of job payrolls, will be closely watched to confirm the upbeat macroeconomic trend. A Reuters poll of economists shows employers created 95,000 jobs in October.

EARNINGS AND FED TO POWER ON THE RALLY

More than 100 S&P 500 companies will report earnings next week, with Lowes (L.N), Pfizer (PFE.N) and Kellogg (K.N) among the highlights.

Among the more than 300 that have already posted earnings for the past quarter, roughly seven out of 10 have reported better numbers than analysts expected.

Some expect the Federal Reserve to announce another round of asset purchases -- similar to the quantitative easing plan set up last year that sparked a year-long rally in stocks.

An equities rally following Fed purchases would most likely be led by commodity-related sectors, said Apex Capital's Francello.

"The Fed is beginning to lay the groundwork for another round of quantitative easing, so that should also put some wind in the back of risk assets," he said.

CHARTS ALSO LOOK BULLISH

The technical picture is also turning bullish, with the S&P moving this week above its 200-day moving average for the first time since early August.

At 1,285 the S&P faces resistance just below 1,300, an RBC Capital Markets note said, but the year-end trend for stocks points higher.

"We're still in a period of high volatility so you can't take anything for granted," said Colas from ConvergEx Group.

"Do you buy the dips? I believe that is the case."

Omar Sharif slaps woman at Qatar film festival (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Omar Sharif sure is a stickler for manners.

The 79-year-old "Lawrence of Arabia" star got a little too hands-on with a female fan Thursday morning at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival in Qatar, slapping the woman when she cut in line for a photograph with him, TMZ reports.

The exchange occurred after the woman approached Sharif on the red carpet and asked for a photograph -- despite the fact that there were other people waiting before her. Sharif didn't like it, and instead of rocking the Casbah he yelled at her in Arabic to wait her turn before letting fly with a hearty slap.

Amazingly, the fan not only didn't flee in terror, but stuck around to have her picture taken with the actor, plastering a smile on her face as if she hadn't just gotten pummeled by one of the foremost actors of his generation.

Maybe she was collecting evidence?

Sharif has a history of hot-headed physical exchanges with strangers. He attacked a police officer in a Paris casino in 2003, and copped to misdemeanor battery in 2007 after brawling with a parking attendant in Beverly Hills.

UN votes to end NATO mission in Libya

A unanimously approved UN resolution ends authorization for NATO operations in Libya, rejecting Libya's insistence that NATO's continued presence would be beneficial.

? A daily summary of global reports on security issues.

The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to conclude NATO's Libya operation at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 31, despite a request from Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) that it stand through the end of 2011.

UNSC Resolution 2016 will put the NTC fully at the helm of the country and free the NTC of military and financial restrictions so that it can begin rebuilding the country's military and economy. NATO is expected to formally announce an end to its Libya mission at a meeting on Friday.

Officially, the resolution ends UN authorization for a no-fly zone and air attacks deemed key to protecting civilians and loosens an arms embargo on the country so that the NTC can begin acquiring weapons, Agence France-Presse reports. It also eases up financial restrictions, such as a freeze on assets of the Libyan National Oil Corporation and restrictions on the central bank and other economic institutions.

Without the UN authorization, NATO will be hard-pressed to justify a continuation of its military operation ? and has not indicated an interest in doing so.

However, it may still have a role assisting the NTC as it consolidates power. The NTC "may foresee a future role for NATO," said US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, according to AFP. For now, it is still conducting air patrols.

On Wednesday, Libyan Deputy UN Ambassador Ibrahim Dabbashi asked the Security Council to postpone terminating its authorization until after the NTC had time to assess Libya's security situation and the "ability to monitor its borders," Reuters reports.

Western diplomats said that the things that NATO could potentially help with now that the war is over are beyond the parameters of the UN mandate for NATO. A NATO official said alliance members are permitted to give security assistance to Libya on an individual country basis, according to Reuters.

Sprint's iPhone 4S launch: 'best ever day of sales' (Digital Trends)

iphone-4-sprint

Sprint?s iPhone gamble has begun to pay off. The wireless provider announced today that its offering of Apple?s iPhone 4S ?resulted in Sprint?s best ever day of sales in retail, web and telesales.? In addition, Sprint recorded lower losses than expected during its third fiscal quarter, which ended before the launch of the iPhone 4S on October 14.

According to its earnings report, Sprint gained a net total of 1.3 million wireless subscribers during the third quarter, which is more than it has achieved in the past five years. The subscriber growth was driven by adding 304,000 postpaid subscribers, 485,000 prepaid and 835,000 wholesale and affiliate additions.

Sprint reports a net loss of $301 million, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $8.3 billion, which is a 2 percent jump from a year ago. Wall Street analysts had predicted a loss of 22 cents a share on revenue of $8.38 billion.

Third quarter sales were primarily driven by Android-based devices from Samsung and Motorola, and new BlackBerry devices.

During the company?s earnings call, Sprint chief executive Dan Hesse said this of the iPhone 4S:

Our early results of selling the iPhone for an iPhone 4S have confirmed the iPhone?s ability to attract new customers. What one hopes to see from the device is a high percentage of gross adds, new customers and the revenue to Sprint. The time we have been selling this device is very short, the early results indicate the iPhone is breaking the previous Sprint record held by the Evo in terms of percentage of device buyers who are gross adds or new to Sprint in the weeks following the launch. We believe two weeks in the March is not enough time to constantly estimate gross add percentages but we plan to provide you with the estimate after the full fourth-quarter results are in. But, early indications are extremely encouraging.

Sprint has reportedly put all its chips in on Apple?s new handset, having committed $20 billion over the next four years to purchase at least 30.5 million iPhone units. Unfortunately, iPhone 4S users have already begun experiencing data speed issues with their Sprint service, something both Sprint and Apple are reportedly working to correct.

When Will Your Android Device Get Ice Cream Sandwich? (ContributorNetwork)

It's not just a frozen dessert; it's also the latest version of Google's open-source Android operating system, and it's packed with new features and sporting a stylish new look. But right now, the only phone sporting it is the Galaxy Nexus ... and it won't even be up for sale until next month.

Existing devices can be upgraded, but unlike iOS updates for iPhones it's a bit of a hassle. It's not as simple as just downloading the latest version of Android; both the manufacturer and the carrier have to do a lot of work to get their customizations and (nonuninstallable) apps ready. Because of that, it can be months before an upgrade comes to an existing handset, if it ever comes at all.

Here's what the Android smartphone and tablet companies have said about when their gadgets will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich:

Motorola

Motorola has so far confirmed Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming to the (upcoming) Droid RAZR and the Droid Bionic. The Droid RAZR will get it sometime early next year, while the Droid Bionic's upgrade timing will be announced once Google releases the final version of Ice Cream Sandwich. A Motorola representative has also said that this year's Xoom tablet will get Ice Cream Sandwich, but did not provide any more details than that.

Sony Ericsson

In a post on the Facebook page for Sony's branch in the Netherlands, a Sony representative basically said the company is still busy upgrading Xperia smartphones to Gingerbread, the previous version. It said "we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us," though, and you can interpret that however you like.

HTC

HTC's HTC Sense overlay is one of the more complex manufacturer customizations for Android, which may explain why HTC hasn't committed to setting a date or naming any handsets or tablets to get Ice Cream Sandwich yet. It's stated that "Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible," but it's also said that "we are committed to maintaining every phone's performance and usability first."

Do it yourself

The programming code to Ice Cream Sandwich is not open-source just yet. Google has said that it will open-source Ice Cream Sandwich once the Galaxy Nexus is available, however, and "custom ROMs" like CyanogenMod will be able to create Ice Cream Sandwich versions at that time. Please note that rooting your phone and installing a custom ROM are not for the faint of heart, and may void your warranty as well.

Beijing 'hubs' haven't curbed population pressures

Fourteen years after Beijing's planned satellite city of Tongzhou rose from a small town with many scattered fields, it still lacks decent schools, hospitals and entertainment complexes that residents need to make it feel like home.

Few of the people for whom Tongzhou was built ? residents in overcrowded downtown Beijing ? live there.

Instead, thousands of young, middle-class and blue-collar migrants from poorer parts of China have moved in, contending with the lack of amenities and the daily jam of cars on the highway into Beijing, which now has a population nearly that of Australia's.

Far from being an easy fix to housing Beijing's soaring population, Tongzhou and other satellite hubs in the capital have created new headaches for planners.

"Everyone who has moved here from inner Beijing regrets it," said a 52-year-old man surnamed Wang who has lived in the Tongzhou area all his life.

"People don't have faith in the education and medical services here, nor does the area have enough businesses," he said. "They can't develop real careers in Tongzhou, so eight out of 10 still work downtown."

Wang's complaints underscore the plight of Beijing city planners and counterparts around the country, where China's breakneck urbanization leads a world set to reach 7 billion people by the end of the month, according to United Nations estimates, and 9 billion by 2050.

Beijing is among the world's most populous cities, though population rankings vary widely. It has swelled by about 10 million people in the past decade, a trend mirrored worldwide, particularly in developing nations.

PhotoBlog: World population set to exceed seven billion

Cities in Africa, Asia and South America are bursting at the seams from migrants seeking better jobs or as farmers flee droughts, floods and other environmental disasters.

In 1950, about 730 million people lived in cities. By 2009, it was nearly 3.5 billion and in four decades it will be 6.3 billion, the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs said in a March 2010 report.

By 2025, there will be 29 megacities globally with 10 million or more people, the report says, from 21 two years ago, with the majority in developing countries.

Yang Weimin, a vice minister of the Office of the Central Leading Group on Finance and Economic Affairs, said that the tens of millions of China's rural migrants boosting urban population could have "negative consequences for development".

"The big cities face big pressures, while the smaller and medium-sized cities lack enough industry to provide sufficient employment," Yang, who has played a prominent role in China's urbanization policies, said at a Tsinghua University forum in Beijing on Saturday.

"So, everyone goes to cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and that creates problems," he said, the influx adding to disparities in public services, education, healthcare and housing conditions.

That explosive growth over-stretches limited resources and infrastructure and places megacities on a collision course with a predicted increase in extreme flooding, storms and rising sea levels from climate change, U.N. Habitat says.

By 2070, almost all cities in a top-10 list of exposure to flooding risk will be in poorer countries, particularly China, India and Thailand.

Even in China, with its wealth and vast infrastructure spending, some city administrations are struggling to keep pace.

This year marks the first time half of China's 1.34 billion population are classified as urban, pointing to the daunting tasks ahead for policymakers as they try to meet demand for services by an increasing wave of migrants.

More than 100 million rural Chinese residents will settle in towns and cities in the next decade, according to a recent government report.

Satellite cities such as Tongzhou were designed to relieve population pressure on Beijing. The government declared in 1991 it would build 14 such hubs on the capital's outskirts.

By 2020, the government expects the satellite cities to house 5.7 million of Beijing's current 19.6 million residents, according to Beijing Municipal Planning Commission.

Yet urban planning experts say China's piecemeal attempts at reducing population density by moving people to satellite cities are not working.

"Although the intention was to create new and independent economic and cultural centers, most of the satellite towns remain economically dependent on Beijing, and have only become dormitory towns," Jeffrey Johnson, who specializes in Chinese megacities at New York's Columbia University, said in emailed comments.

In Tongzhou, clusters of drab high-rise apartments, many half-empty, dot the town 20 miles from Beijing's city center. Styled after faux European villas, some of the apartments' facades have Roman columns and names like "New Village".

"I came here because I could only afford the housing prices in this part of Beijing," said Ma Teng, 29, who moved from central Anhui province. "When I bought my apartment in 2007, the area around was desolate. There is no entertainment, you can't even go to a movie here."

Johnson said satellite cities need to be developed far enough away from the urban core to encourage independence and discourage commuting. For now, that isn't happening.

On a weekday morning at Beijing's Tiantongyuanbei subway station, an outlying hub about 21 km north of the city center, thousands of commuters are crammed nose-to-neck.

"Yeah, it's annoying, it's crowded. But it's also our best option," Zhang Yu, a 30-year-old make-up sales associate said, before plunging into the press of bodies. Her two-hour commute began with a 15-minute wait just to get to the station door.

Population growth in China's megacities outpaces growth in the country's more moderately sized cities, according to a 2011 report on China's cities published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. China has between three and seven megacities, depending on different calculations, with several on the cusp.

Story: World population nears 7 billion: Can we handle it?

To ease population pressures, the Beijing government said it plans to move thousands of residents out of the city center, has shut down schools for migrant workers' children and ordered low-rent housing in underground shelters to be cleared out.

Nationally, the government is encouraging the growth of cities inland as well.

To accommodate the onrush of new city dwellers across the country, China will have to pave 5 billion square meters of road, construct 5 million buildings, including 50,000 skyscrapers, and add up to 170 mass transit systems, a report by consultants McKinsey & Co says. All by 2025, it added, when China would have 221 cities with one million or more people.

Some countries need to build new capitals.

Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, is overcrowded with about 10 million people and growing quickly. The city is prone to flooding and rising sea levels, is sinking in parts because of excess ground water extraction, is chronically congested and is in an earthquake zone. The government has raised the idea of moving out.

But building a new city means good planning is vital.

Officials in Beijing said in mid-October the government plans to pump $1.6 billion over five years into Tongzhou to connect it by highway to the international airport, and build a university campus and a children's hospital, making it a "magnetic pole" for development.

It might take more than that.

"Any kind of plan for decentralizing the population requires a series of policies that work together," said Wang Jianguo, a senior project officer on urbanization at the Asian Development Bank's Beijing office. "If you only have a population policy without an employment policy, without an industry development policy, education, medical policy, it won't work."

So your small business need not be failing for you to make the best use of a business consultant ? successful businesses also employ them to accelerate what may already be a rapid growth rate.

?

??????? Have you just started up and are unsure where to go next?

Is your business losing money?
Do you understand your market but lack some necessary business skills?
Is your business growing but you want it to grow faster?
Have you reached a point where you need professional help to advance?
Have you a need find out more about your customers? needs?
Starting up a new business from scratch
Maximizing the profitability of your business
Locating areas of your business needing specific attention
Identifying potential problems and being proactive in resolving them
Helping you to formulate strategic and systematic plans to enable your business to grow
Making best use of marketing and the USPs of your products or services
Helping you find finance to develop your business
Providing you with new ideas and strategies you had never thought of yourself
A business consultant provides the knowledge and know-how currently missing in your business

]]>

If you can identify with any of these situations then a business consultant can help you. Here are some of the benefits hiring a business consultant can offer:

Although you may believe hiring a business consultant to be expensive, they are more affordable than you might believe. They are very cost effective and what you spend in fees you can make many times over in improvement in efficiency and profitability.

There are no doubts that hiring a business consultant can benefit your business, but to make the best use of such as service you should:

?a)? Hire the best you can afford ? with good references and an excellent track record, and

?b)? Learn from them: how do they operate, what techniques are they using and what third party services, websites or software do they use.

Hiring is fine, but make sure that you learn from them as much as possible.? While the major reason why business owners need to hire a business consultant is that they genuinely need help, it doesn?t make sense to pay money and fail to learn how to copy their techniques and understand the third party services that they may use.

?

Many entrepreneurs use a gung-ho trial-by-fire approach to improving their business ? see what happens and if it works, then great, but if not, then start again. Why? Why try to reinvent the wheel and prove what is already known? By employing the services of a business consultant you can get off to a flying start, have any problems you encountered resolved immediately and get on to making more money as quickly as possible.

What you lose in ?learning for yourself? would be better spent on outsourcing your business knowledge and would offer a better return than the cost of learning. So, if you feel that you need a bit more knowledge than you already have, don?t wait until you have learned by trial and error, but pay for it and get on with building a successful and profitable business.

?

Hiring a business consultant can offer a business many benefits ? whether that is a new start-up, a failing business or a successful concern. Every business can improve, and if you believe the financial benefit exceeds the outlay, then it?s a no-brainer.

So take that burden off your shoulders and pass it on to somebody with the breadth of experience and proven ability to make the changes and improvements that you need to let you sleep easily at night without worry for yourself and your employees. That?s why small business owners need to hire a business consultant. To teach them what they don?t know!

(AP) ? Dan Wheldon's friends shed a few tears and shared lots of laughs Sunday.

Some couldn't even bear to say goodbye a week after the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner was killed in a fiery crash at Las Vegas.

The 87-minute memorial service was a fitting tribute to Wheldon's life, with former teammates and bosses providing dozens of stories about the roles Wheldon played ? fierce competitor on the track, comedian off of it and loving father and husband.

"At first Dan was pretty much the little brother we didn't want," four-time IndyCar champ Dario Franchitti said drawing laughter before pausing to collect his thoughts. "And now we'd do anything to have him back. We'll miss you D.W."

With an estimated crowd of 2,000 to 3,000 filling Conseco Fieldhouse, it was a shared sentiment on yet another dark day in the racing world.

Hundreds of fans signed two large banners that will be given to Wheldon's wife, Susie, who attended the ceremony but did not speak.

Some of the community's most prominent organizations ? the Colts, Pacers, Indianapolis 500 Festival and Indiana General Assembly Motorsports Caucus ? sent floral arrangements. A few fans wore Wheldon No. 4 shirts from his days with Panther Racing, and others delivered flowers, contributed to the family trust fund or dropped off personal mementoes.

"Thank you for the many wonderful memories," Rebecca Nix wrote on a folded flag with a photo of Wheldon pinned to it.

The day was full of emotion ? from the moment of silence organizers observed in honor of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who was killed Sunday in a crash at Malaysia, right down to Garth Brooks' final song, "The Dance."

But after touching eulogies from IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President and CEO Jeff Belskus, most speakers interspersed light-hearted moments from Wheldon's life with somber farewells because they said that's how Wheldon would have wanted it.

Tony Kanaan, the 2004 series champion and one of Wheldon's closest friends, recounted the pranks he, Franchitti and Bryan Herta pulled on Wheldon when the four were teammates with Michael Andretti's team. He remembered stealing the left shoe from each of Wheldon's pairs in Japan and shipping them back to the U.S., the time they threw everything out of the self-proclaimed neat-freak's tidy locker and then had to help him clean it up and the countless times they joked about Wheldon's "tight" racing suit.

From his supply of hair products to his boy-band looks, the teammates teased Wheldon mercilessly.

And everybody had some sort of funny story.

Panther Racing's Mike Kitchel recalled the "phone-stealing" game often played with the public relations staff. Wheldon would take the staff's cell phones and send messages to someone from the contact list, setting up meetings, lunches or worse.

Business manager Mickey Ryan called Wheldon the Imelda Marcos of race-car drivers.

But in the end, everyone was emotional.

"Our time together is not over. We have our friends, we have our memories, and one day we'll be together again," Kanaan said. "It is for this reason that I'm not saying goodbye because goodbye is final. So today, I say see you later."

Some of the sport's biggest names attended the service.

In addition to Franchitti, Kanaan and Herta were current drivers Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Graham Rahal; former IndyCar star Sam Hornish Jr. and three-time Indy winner Johnny Rutherford. Team owners John Barnes, Sarah Fisher and Roger Penske and speedway chairwoman Mari Hulman George also were in the crowd.

So were a handful of National Guard members, the people Wheldon represented while driving for Barnes' Panther Racing team.

None of them spoke during a service that included a photo collage of Wheldon's greatest moments in racing ? from his racing days as a child to the moment he kissed Indy's famed yard of bricks as his 2-year-old Sebastian sat next to him.

Wheldon's father and Wheldon's siblings also sent a videotaped message thanking fans for their support. Country music star Reba McEntire and The Band Perry also performed during the service.

The stage was decorated with a Borg-Warner Trophy and a winner's wreath from the 500, two bottles of milk, symbolic of his two Indy wins, and Wheldon's 2005 points championship trophy.

Mike Hull, managing director for Target Chip Ganassi, brought his own prop ? a pair of sunglasses to mimic Wheldon's trademark look around the track. Everybody laughed.

"This guy was in the middle of everything we were doing at Chip Ganassi Racing," said Hull, Wheldon's boss when he left Andretti's team. "I had never, up to that point, been around someone like Dan Wheldon."

On the track, Wheldon was a hard-nosed racer with a penchant for finding his way to the front.

Wheldon began driving go-karts as a 4-year-old, and racing stayed with him as he attended school in England as a child, winning eight British national titles along the way. He moved to the United States in 1999, quickly trying to find sponsor money to fund his dream, and by 2002 ? after stints in some lower-profile open-wheel series, such as the F2000 championship, Toyota Atlantic Series and IndyLights ? he was on the IndyCar grid for the first time.

By 2005, he was not only the funniest driver on the circuit but the most dominant. He won his first Indy that year, giving Michael Andretti his first victory lap around the famed Brickyard, and later went on to win the points championship.

But over the years, Wheldon grew up in front of everyone.

After winning his first Indy, his business managers said, Wheldon partied until 4 a.m. After becoming the 18th two-time winner in May, he reserved the celebration for his wife and two young sons.

And that's how most in the racing community will remember Wheldon.

"Dan's legacy on and off the track lives on in each one of us and we should remember that," Herta said. "God bless you Danny and thank you. We all appreciate it.

Italian rider killed in Malaysian motorcycle race (AP)

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia ? Italian rider Marco Simoncelli died Sunday after crashing and being hit by two other riders at the Malaysian MotoGP motorcycle race. He was 24.

After the crash, Simoncelli was taken to the medical center at the Sepang circuit where he died of chest, head and neck injuries, organizers said.

"He was already unconscious when the medical team arrived," MotoGP medical director Michele Macchiagodena said. "We attempted to resuscitate him but failed. He died 45 minutes later."

The race, the second to last of the season, was canceled.

Simoncelli died a week after Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon was killed in a 15-car accident in the IndyCar finale at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Simoncelli lost control of his Honda at turn 11 four minutes into the race, but his bike regained partial grip and swerved across the track and into the path of American Colin Edwards and Italian Valentino Rossi.

Simoncelli's helmet was ripped off in the collision and he lay motionless on the track. He had been fourth at the end of the first lap.

"Quite clearly the consequences and circumstances surrounding the accident will be thoroughly investigated," race director Paul Butler said.

Edwards dislocated a shoulder in the crash. It was reset under anesthesia and the American was "fine," Macchiagodena said.

The Italian's death was first fatality in MotoGP since Japan's Daijiro Katoh died from injuries sustained at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix. The number of deaths in MotoGP since it was founded in 1949 is now at 47, MotoGP said.

Last year, Japanese teenager Shoya Tomizawa died after crashing in a Moto2 race at San Marino.

Sepang circuit chairman Mokhzani Mahathir voiced his condolences and said it was unfortunate that a death occurred for the first time since the circuit opened in 1999.

"We had our standard operating procedure ... this is one-of-a-kind freak incident where the helmet came off and I am sure (motorcycling body) FIM and MotoGP will be looking into this," he said.

Newly crowned MotoGP champion Casey Stoner said that he feared for Simoncelli after seeing video of the crash.

"As soon as I saw the footage it just makes you sick inside," the Australian told the British Broadcasting Corporation. "Whenever the helmet comes off that's not a good sign."

The Italian motorcycling federation canceled all events planned for Sunday at the Mugello circuit near Florence.

The Italian Olympic Committee said it would honor Simoncelli by requesting a minute of silence at all Sunday's soccer matches, with AC Milan, his favorite team, planning to don armbands in his memory.

Italian Olympic Committee President Gianni Petrucci said Sunday marked the saddest day of his presidency.

"Life is sacred; you shouldn't die at age 24 just for a race," ANSA news agency quoted him as saying.

Tunisia election draws 70 pct of registered voters (AP)

TUNIS, Tunisia ? Tunisians turned out in force for their country's first truly free elections Sunday, voting that is expected to favor a long-banned Islamist party and seen as a bellwether for pro-democracy movements across the Arab world.

With soldiers keeping order, no violence was reported near the end of the voting, though authorities noted minor scattered violations. Thousands of observers monitored Tunisia's first elections since an uprising overthrew the longtime leader and set off anti-government revolts around the Middle East.

Voters ? women with headscarves and without, former political prisoners, young people whose Facebook posts helped fuel the revolution in the North African country ? are electing a 217-seat assembly that will appoint a new government and then write a new constitution.

Kamel Jendoubi, head of the electoral commission, said turnout was "over 60 percent and close to 70 percent" by 4 p.m. (1500 GMT; 11 a.m. EDT) Sunday, three hours before the polls close. That was above expectations.

He told reporters there was no violence, but some "soft" intimidation of voters, such as street demonstrations and people continuing to campaign on voting day, which is against the rules. Some parties had received warnings, but he did not name them.

Results might not come until Monday or Tuesday. The party expected to come out on top is the moderate Islamic movement Ennahda, whose victory, especially in a comparatively secular society like Tunisia, could have wide implications for similar religious parties in the region.

Voters are definitively turning the page on the 23-year presidency of Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, who was overthrown by a monthlong uprising on Jan. 14 stirred by anger at unemployment, corruption and repression.

The unexpected revolution in the quiet Mediterranean country ? cherished by European tourists for its sandy beaches and desert oases ? set off a series of similar uprisings against entrenched leaders, an event now being called the Arab Spring.

If Tunisia's elections produce an effective new government they will serve as an inspiration to pro-democracy advocates across the region, including in next-door Libya, where longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was killed last week by rebel forces.

"The old elections were fraudulent and this one is for our children and grandchildren so that even if I soon die, I will be happy and content," said Tayyib Awishi, 83, dressed in a crisp white robe and skull cap, in a crowded polling station in the working class Tunis suburb of Hay al-Tadammon.

At a nearby station in the same neighborhood, former political prisoner Touhami Sakouhi said he was ready to wait in line all day.

"It's a historic day, a moment of joy and celebration. Even if I have to stand in line 24 hours, I would not give up the chance to savor this air of freedom," he said.

In the more affluent Tunis suburb of al-Aouina, 18-year-old language student and former protester Zeinab Souayah said, "I'm going to grow up and think back on these days and tell my children about them."

"It feels great, it's awesome," she added, in English.

The ballot is an extra-large piece of paper bearing the names and symbols of the parties fielding a candidate in each district. The symbols are meant to aid the illiterate, estimated at about 25 percent of the population in a country with one of the most educated populations in the region.

Voters in each of the country's 33 districts, six of which are abroad, have a choice of between roughly 40 and 80 electoral lists.

It's a cacophony of choice in a country effectively under one-party rule since independence from France in 1956, and where the now-popular Islamist party Ennahda was long banned.

There are 7.5 million potential voters, though only 4.4 million of them, or just under 60 percent, are actually registered. People can vote with their identity cards but only at certain stations, which caused some confusion.

In the 10 months since the uprising, Tunisia's economy and unemployment, part of the reason for the revolution in the first place, has only become worse as tourists and foreign investors have stayed away.

Many have expressed indifference about the elections out of frustration that new jobs have yet to appear and life has not improved since the revolution.

Sony's Kazuo Hirai: liveblog from AsiaD!

Witness: Swallowing propofol not fatal

An expert in the powerful anesthetic blamed for Michael Jackson's death has told jurors there is no way the pop star could have caused his own death by swallowing the anesthetic propofol.

Dr. Steven Shafer is testifying on what is expected to be the final day of the prosecution's involuntary manslaughter case against Dr. Conrad Murray.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. He was Jackson's personal physician for roughly two months before the singer's unexpected death in June 2009. The cardiologist's attorneys will cross-examine Shafer on Thursday.

Shafer's testimony is a direct response to a report prepared by defense expert Dr. Paul White. White thought that Jackson may have caused his own death by swallowing the anesthetic.

Shafer says it's impossible for any propofol that's swallowed to enter the bloodstream, where coroner's officials found the drug after Jackson's June 2009 death.?

Shafer, an expert in the anesthetic propofol that Jackson's doctor had been using as a sleep aid, said there were 17 violations by Murray that each put Jackson's life at risk.

Many of the violations concerned modern life-saving equipment that Murray lacked when he gave Jackson propofol in the bedroom of his rented mansion, but Shafer said among the cardiologist's worst transgressions was he put his own interests ahead of Jackson's.

Since Ancient Greece ? and probably before ? Shafer said societies had held doctors to high standards. He quoted the Hippocratic oath, "'In every house where I come, I will enter only for the good of my patients.'"

Instead of honoring the ancient creed, Murray came to Jackson's rented mansion nightly and gave the singer propofol, a drug as a sleep aid, a use it was never intended for, Shafer said. He likened the Houston-based cardiologist to an employee, akin to a housekeeper, who wouldn't tell his boss no.

"Saying yes is not what doctors do," he testified. "A competent doctor would know you do not do this."

Shafer, a Columbia University professor and researcher who helped write the guidelines and warnings included with every vial of propofol, repeatedly said Murray's actions were unconscionable, unethical and illegal. He frequently travels to lecture on propofol's effects, and his testimony took a global view Wednesday as he described attending anesthesia conferences in China, research from Canada, and how hieroglyphs in ancient Egypt showed doctors interacting with patient.

But he said Murray's case is unlike any he's seen before.

"We are in pharmacological never-never land here, something that was done to Michael Jackson and no one else in history to my knowledge," he told jurors.

Shafer's testimony tied together pieces of prosecution's case against Murray laid out over four weeks. The professor reminded jurors that Murray had bought more than four gallons of propofol to use on the singer during his employment, was on the phone in the hours before Jackson's death and delayed calling 911 when he found the singer unresponsive.

"A patient who is about to die does not look all that different from a patient who is OK," Shafer said, adding that doctors cannot multitask and properly monitor a patient who is sedated.

"The worst disasters occur in sedation and they occur when people cut corners," Shafer said. In Jackson's case, "virtually none of the safeguards were in place," he added.

Shafer, who wrote the package insert that guides doctors in the use of the anesthetic, leaned forward and spoke to jurors directly at times, as if he were in a classroom. Indeed, the early portion of his testimony was a crash course in propofol, explaining its effects on the body and why despite being a remarkable drug, it needed to be used by skilled people in the proper medical setting.

The researcher told jurors that it appeared Murray intended to give Jackson large doses of propofol on a nightly basis. He said records showed Murray purchased 130 100ml vials of propofol in the nearly three months before Jackson's death.

Shafer said that is "an extraordinary amount to purchase to administer to a single individual."

Like other expert witnesses, Shafer based much of his opinions on the case on Murray's own words during a lengthy interview with police two days after Jackson's death.

He said the lack of record-keeping was a violation of Jackson's rights, especially since something went wrong.

"He has a right to know what was done to him," Shafer said. "With no medical record, the family has been denied that right."

When Shafer spoke of Jackson's family, a couple jurors looked out into the audience, where the singer's mother, father, sister Rebbie and brother Randy were seated.

Testimony has shown that Murray took no notes on his treatment of Jackson and didn't record his vital signs in the hours before the singer's death.

Shafer said he was testifying for the prosecution without a fee because he wants to restore public confidence in doctors who use propofol, which he called a wonderful drug when properly administered.

"I am asked every day in the operating room, 'Are you going to give me the drug that killed Michael Jackson,'" Shafer said. "This is a fear that patients do not need to have."

Defense attorneys will begin calling their own witnesses. One of them will be a colleague of Shafer's at Columbia, Dr. Paul White, who was sitting in the courtroom during Wednesday's testimony.

Murray was mainly stoic as he listened to his medical skills and judgment were repeatedly called into question. White, seated behind him, took notes.
