Cautiously playing Japan's surging stock market

Cautiously playing Japan's surging stock market

News On Japan via Reuters -- Jan 12

Institutional investors have been increasing their holdings in Japan's surging stock market, yet investors may want to keep a narrow focus when adding exposure to Japan. That's because the Nikkei index's 25 percent jump since mid-October is largely the result of new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's intense pressure on the Bank of Japan to double its inflation target to 2 percent. The move, aimed at breaking Japan's long cycle of deflation, would weaken the value of the yen and could help make Japanese exports more competitive overseas.

Markets have begun pricing in the policy, similar to the U.S. Federal Reserve's rounds of quantitative easing. That has sent the dollar up more than 12 percent against the yen since November, hitting a 2-1/2-year high. A falling yen makes investing in Japan trickier for dollar-based U.S. investors. Even as stock prices go up, a falling yen eats into returns.

NFL playoffs: Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers - live!

It's not everyday that a head coach replaces a quarterback that led his team to the brink of the Super Bowl, but back in November, that?s exactly what Jim Harbaugh did out in San Francisco. So far the move to play the crafty Colin Kaepernick (and his tattoos), a QB that Harbaugh drafted, has worked out - in the regular season that is. Now you have a rookie on the field to face a much healthier Green Bay defense for the right to play in the NFC Championship, and so the jury is still very much out how that all works out in a big spot. The 49ers have to reach the Super Bowl to validate the move, it?s that simple. Alex Smith and his superb QB rating was rolling along before suffering a concussion against the Rams, beating three playoff teams, including these Packers, in the process - why mess with success? Well, the coach thinks the rookie, who can rattle defenses with his ability to make plays with his feet and his arm, gives his offense a better chance to win the whole thing. It?s hard enough to find a QB to lead you that close to a Super Bowl, even harder to find two, and so Harbaugh?s assertion better be correct - you don?t get too many chances at these things.

Meanwhile the Packers also have something to prove. They have the best quarterback in the league under center, and they are also feeling the heat to win now. Aaron Rodgers is too good to have just one ring (as another well known GB QB finished with), and their fans, having been through that once already, know that Super Bowl windows never stay open for long. The good news is that Clay Matthews is going to be seen more on the field today than in commercials, having returned from a hamstring injury. Of course it never hurts to have a cornerback like Charles Woodson harassing San Francisco receivers - he made it back into the lineup in time to warm up against the Minnesota Vikings last week, who without their starting quarterback, never really got a chance to test Green Bay?s secondary. Did you know that despite Aaron Rodgers dominance, Green Bay don't have a 1000-yard receiver? I guess he does spread it?around?quite well...?

This was supposed to be the all-world match-up for the NFC Championship last season, until Eli Manning and his New York Giants got in the way last year - will it be worth the wait? Candlestick Park will host the contest, and that?s worth noting, because the field is usually a factor, and the 49ers do well there in the playoffs there, boasting a 19-7 record overall at the old park that could be hosting its final postseason game.

Swiss lab chief disputes USADA claim on Armstrong

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) ? The director of Switzerland's anti-doping lab has disputed claims by U.S. Anti-Doping Agency CEO Travis Tygart that he helped Lance Armstrong avoid being caught for doping.

Lab director Martial Saugy called a news conference Friday to challenge accusations that he provided Armstrong with information on how to avoid detection for use of EPO.

Tygart told the television program "60 Minutes Sports" on Wednesday that Saugy acknowledged to him that he gave Armstrong and team manager Johan Bruyneel, "the keys to beating EPO tests" before the 2002 Tour de France.

Saugy says he and Tygart have "different memories" of their discussion in 2010 soon after U.S. federal investigators opened a probe into Armstrong.

Saugy repeated his claim that his 2002 meeting with Armstrong was ordered by international cycling federation UCI. He denies it was wrong to meet with the rider.

In Memoriam: Megan Fox's Twitter Page (2013 - 2013)

Megan Fox Getty Images

You guys. Megan Fox and Twitter are dunzo.

All that potential, and all we got was one measly week of Megan Fox as @MeganFox talking about Megan Fox.

After pontificating the existentialism of the instant social networking site on the instant social networking site, she updated her trusty Facebook page to let us know it's over.

She especially knifed us by closing with that hashtag, since hashtags don't mean anything on Facebook. Ouch.

And now we're basically like...

... because our lives will now be deprived of things like Megan Fox tweeting about Megan Fox holding a Boba Fett coaster ...

.... and Megan Fox tweeting for people to go see Megan Fox's movie while not mentioning that Megan Fox is in the movie ...

... and Megan Fox sharing a picture of her family dressed up as the Joads ...

... and Megan Fox throwing up a pic of a life-size R2D2 with a background easter egg shot of a Megan Fox-esque poster lady who may actually be Megan Fox.

Oh, the humanity! The Twitterverse will just never be the same.

In?memorial?of the @MeganFox - bio: "Lover. Healer. Mother" - that barely was ...

McKennis of US takes downhill for 1st WCup victory

ST. ANTON, Austria (AP) ? American Alice McKennis earned her first World Cup victory by winning a downhill Saturday, and Lindsey Vonn placed sixth on her return from a nearly monthlong break.

McKennis had never finished in the top three before coming down the Karl Schranz course in 1 minute, 14.62 seconds to beat Daniela Merighetti of Italy by 0.07. Anna Fenninger of Austria was third, and overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia finished fourth.

Vonn, the defending overall champion who returned to the circuit after recovering from an intestinal illness, was 0.34 behind. American teammate Laurenne Ross was fifth.

Because snow at the top of the course was too soft, organizers decided to use the lower super-G start, shortening the initial 2.2-kilometer long downhill course.

International Spotlight: Marta Schneider in Japan

Marta Schneider in Japan

Marta Schneider is studying abroad for a year in Tokyo, Japan, at Waseda University through an Associated Colleges of the Midwest program called Japan Study. After spending several childhood years in Japan, she developed a desire to learn more about the Japanese language and culture. A Knox College junior from Dunlap, Illinois, she is double-majoring in economics and Asian studies. She also is blogging about her time in Japan.

What inspired you to pursue study abroad in general, and why did you decide to pursue this particular program or country for your study abroad experience?
Having spent a few years living abroad in Japan when I was younger, I knew that that I really wanted to study abroad at some point in my college experience, either to further my education in Japanese or to experience a culture I had never been a part of before. (Photo at top: Marta Schneider, at left, with friends at Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. Photo below right: Mount Fuji.)

Can you cite an example of how your in-classroom and/or out-of-the-classroom experiences at Knox have benefited you as you studied abroad and traveled internationally?
One thing I have learned at Knox that I think has truly benefitted me here in Japan is being flexible. When you study abroad, there is always a large amount of uncertainty about what might happen on a day-to-day basis. At Knox, we are taught to think critically, which I think has led me to be more flexible in situations I am not prepared for because I am able to view the situation from more than the most obvious angle. Marta Schneider in Japan

How do you think this study abroad experience will benefit you in terms of your education, future career plans, personal development, etc.?
In terms of my education, study abroad is doing wonders for my language learning. I can tell that I am getting better at Japanese, which is really exciting because becoming as fluent as possible was one of my goals. In terms of my personal development, study abroad has (thus far) taught me a lot about my relationship to Japan and how to manage life on my own.

What has been the best part of studying abroad?
The best part about studying abroad is being able to be a member of the society that you are studying. I think living with a host family is an important part of that because you get to see the family dynamic and then attend school the way someone else your age would. Plus the language immersion is the best for language learning.

Was this your first experience with international travel? If not, where else have you lived or traveled?
This was not my first experience with international travel. I lived in Japan for three years as a child and have been back to Japan twice prior to coming on this study abroad program. Once was with family for vacation and the other was with Japan Term.

Japan Term really prepared me for what it was going to be like being on my own in Japan and being with other students my age, which was something I had not experienced before. Japan Term also built a good foundation for how to interact with Japanese culture. I have also been to China.

What have you learned so far during your study abroad experience? Is there anything else you are looking forward to during the remainder of your trip?
I still have seven months left, which I am really grateful for, because I am not ready to go home yet! I still feel like I have a lot left to learn about Japan and myself.

A few things I am looking forward to in the coming months include: my host brother?s wedding, cultural practicum, having more free time to travel, and more classes! I am really looking forward to my host brother?s wedding because it is usually a family-only event, but they have asked me to come, which is really special, and such an honor.

The cultural practicum is a four-week long trip to another part of Japan where you participate in the community in some way. I am going to the Tohoku (tsunami-affected) region to do relief work. I am very excited. (Photo below: Marta Schneider, seated at center in the back row, with her host family and friends.)
