Short booms still annoying: Scientists study how mid-level noise bursts lasting less than a second affect the concentration of arithmetic-solving test subjects

Short booms still annoying: Scientists study how mid-level noise bursts lasting less than a second affect the concentration of arithmetic-solving test subjects [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 18-Oct-2012

Noise can be distracting, especially to a person trying to concentrate on a difficult task. Studying annoying noises helps architects design better building environments and policy makers choose effective noise regulations. To better understand how short noise bursts affect humans' mental state, researchers from the University of Nebraska Lincoln played quarter-second-long white noise clips to test subjects as they worked on arithmetic problems. The researchers noticed a slight general trend toward lower performance when louder noises were played, and also identified sound level ranges that caused participants to report significant levels of annoyance. The researchers report their findings at the 164th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), held Oct. 22 26 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The motivation for the research came from NASA's low-boom supersonic aircraft program. Sonic booms, generated when aircraft traveling faster than the speed of sound leave cones of compressed air in their wake, are loud and potentially unnerving. In 1964, when the Federal Aviation Administration starting flying supersonic jets regularly over Oklahoma City as part of a test called Operation Bongo, many citizens filed complaints and damage claims. NASA is now working on developing aircraft that create softer booms, but is it not clear at what volume regular booms, as might be created by commercial supersonic aircraft flying over land, would be acceptable.

Lily Wang, an architectural acoustician at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, worked with her graduate student Christopher Ainley to design an experiment to test how noise bursts affect the performance and perceptions of test subjects. Previous studies had looked at loud noises of more than 80 decibels (dB), louder than an average vacuum cleaner, and found a clear effect on subjects' ability to solve arithmetic problems. Wang and her team reduced the volume to see if they could find a threshold value under which the noise would not significantly affect the participants. Twenty-seven test subjects were asked to memorize 6-digit numbers, and then, when shown a 4-digit number, the subjects had to subtract the second number from the first number in their heads and type the answer on a keyboard. Occasionally the researchers would play a quarter-second burst of noise while the second number appeared on the screen.

The researchers tested noise bursts in the range of approximately 50 80 dBA. The dBA unit indicates that the volume was measured with a filter used to approximate the human ear's response to sound. The noise levels were comparable to about the sound level on a suburban street corner at the low end, to vacuum-cleaner loud at the high end. While the test subjects solved a lower percentage of problems correctly when interrupted with a noise at the louder end of the spectrum, the difference was not enough to be statistically significant. However, there was a significant difference in the levels of annoyance that the participants reported when quizzed afterwards about their perceptions of the noise environment. "The test subjects sort of adjusted to the quieter booms, but the louder ones remained jolting," says Wang. "This suggests that the acceptable noise from sonic booms should not be higher than 70 dBA once it gets inside the house."

The researchers' lab did not have the necessary equipment to mimic the very low-frequency component of the noise produced by sonic booms, Wang notes, but the work helped to quantify the effect of the short duration characteristic of the booms. As a next step, the researchers hope to study perceptions of the rattling component of noise that is often associated with supersonic jets passing overhead.

J.A. Tyler, Author And Founder Of Mud Luscious Press, Talks ...

J.A. Tyler is busy. Very busy. An author and editor, Tyler is producing some of the most challenging, distinct and provocative works of modern fiction -- either in his own work or the work that he publishes from other authors. Tyler is the founding editor of Mud Luscious Press, an indie fiction press out of Fort Collins, Colorado, publishing what it calls, "raw and aggressive works by writers unafraid to destroy and re-suture words" since 2007. It recently expanded to include two imprints, Nephew, for smaller experimental works, and Blue Square Press, a small press run by Ben Spivey and David Peak that also publishes experimental work and was acquired by MLP in 2011.

Tyler's own work as a writer and editor is really best described by online literary magazine The Collagist in their 2011 review of his book A Man of Glass & All the Ways We Have Failed:

As founding editor of Mud Luscious Press, he has been at the forefront of a movement in publishing books of all sizes and timbres, both tonal and atonal. A movement of small press books that takes seriously the charge to make a literary instrument out of a text.

Tyler recently chatted with The Huffington Post about what inspires his writing, where his unique style comes from and running a book press in Colorado.

Who are you?

I?m the author of eight books of prose and poetry, with several other titles forthcoming through 2015. On the editorial side, my roles include founding editor of Mud Luscious Press, editorial assistant at Tarpaulin Sky, editorial assistant at Dzanc Books, reviewer for The Nervous Breakdown and The Rumpus, and contributor to Monkeybicycle and Pank. I am also a high school Language Arts, Theater, and Film instructor, a summer institute co-director of Colorado State University?s National Writing Project, a freelance line-editor, a husband of nearly 13 years, and father of two adorable kiddos.

How long have you been a writer?

In the 6th grade I wrote a ?book? modeled on the choose-your-own adventure stories I?d been reading. I illustrated that book and the teacher laminated the cover. My first ?professionally? published story appeared in The Writer?s Post Journal in 2005. One of those two places is the starting point, though I?m not sure which one.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I?m not sure: Maybe as early as grade school, when I was devouring as much Dean Koontz and Stephen King as I could. Or maybe since I read (and fell in love with) The Catcher in the Rye and The Old Man and the Sea and Of Mice and Men in high school. Or maybe it was in college, when I discovered Tim O?Brien and Kurt Vonnegut. It feels like I?ve always known, only never said it out loud. It has just become what I am, or I have become whatever being a writer is.

Which writers would you say inspire your own work?

In a classical sense, Ernest Hemingway and e. e. cummings are my biggest influences. In a more contemporary vein, I?m inspired by Peter Markus, James Chapman, Jesse Ball, Gary Lutz, Shane Jones, Blake Butler, Selah Saterstrom, Neil LaBute, David Ohle, Michael Kimball, Matt Bell, and a host of other beautiful writers.

Where do your stories come from? Where do they start? From a picture? A character? A setting? A feeling? A job? Tell us about the process.

My stories typically start with a single image or captured moment in time. From there, the words just come. I blare music so loud that I can?t think anymore and the images spool. All I have to do is gently set them down on a page, because they are fragile, and can break.

What is your writing process like? Do you write everyday? Do you write in your spare time? How does it work for you?

Currently, with two kids and a mountain of always-catch-up work, I write on an irregular basis. Typically I write either late in the morning (before anyone is up) or late at night (when everyone is gone) and I usually tap out at about 1000 words or so before I feel good and spent. I start each new writing bout with a review / revise of the previous session?s material, then dive in. When it comes time for whole manuscript editing, I set aside any writing I?m doing to focus solely on those edits, and I?ve quickly learned that no matter how much I dislike the taste of editing, the
more editing I do, the stronger the final work it.

What is it like to be a writer in Colorado?

I?m eternally influenced by my environment, so living in a place like Colorado is perfect: sun rain wind snow, trees with and without leaves, mountains lakes rivers cities. Really, there is no better place for me. Plus there is a growing richness in indie presses here (Counterpath, Subito, Mud Luscious Press) as well as a strong presence from writing programs at universities in Fort Collins, Boulder, and Denver.

What is Mud Luscious Press?

Mud Luscious Press is an indie press based in Fort Collins, seeking to publish raw and aggressive works that challenge the defining border between fiction and poetry. We started as an online quarterly in 2007, began making handmade chapbooks in 2008, and switched to perfect-bound books in 2010. Since our beginning we?ve published 21 online quarterly issues, 60+ handmade chapbook titles (produced in the tens of thousands of copies, all made at my kitchen table with a printer, a stapler, and some rubber stamps), nine novel(la)s, and two anthologies.

Also, in 2011 we began our Nephew Imprint Series, which publishes those shorter works that were so linguistically ripe we simply couldn?t live without them, and we now have 6 titles under that imprint. At the same time we acquired Blue Square Press, an already established press that publishes even more aggressively experimental work than other series in the MLP line, and which currently has 5 titles to its credit.

What made you want to start a publishing company?

Every decision I?ve ever made with Mud Luscious Press from founding the online quarterly to making chapbooks to producing books and acquiring imprints has been a gut reaction. I wanted to, so I did, and here we are, six years later, dozens of titles distributed across the world on a daily basis, and waiting for the next instinctual push to tell us where to go next.

What kind of books/writing/writers do you look for for MLP?

We look for those authors and books that understand how to use poetic language and poetic approaches but that maintain a narrative arc as well. We firmly believe that these books are rare, so when we find them, we publish them.

Is it difficult for an indie book publisher to make it and get the attention of the reader whose attention is scattered by so many forms of entertainment/art these days?

Yes. A million times yes. But so long as our current book funds the next book, we?ll keep at it.

What is next for MLPs? What books are coming out, have just come out, any secret things churning/cooking that you want to tell us about?

We recently re-released Ken Sparling?s magnificent cult-classic Dad Says He Saw You at the Mall (originally published by Knopf in 1996) with gutted cover art by the original designer and a new introduction by Sparling that is, in short, brilliant. We are also poised to release our last novel(la) of the year, Robert Kloss?s stunning civil war era The Alligators of Abraham. This is Kloss?s first full-length book and it is one of the richest and most enchanting titles in our collection -- plus it will come with a hand-drawn cover and interior illustration by genius Matt Kish, author of Moby-Dick in Pictures (Tin House, 2011).

We are also looking forward to our next Nephew title, Billie the Bull by xTx, which Dennis Cooper described as ??mind-bogglingly and intricately superb down to its tiniest punctuation marks. To me, xTx is about as great as it can get. Seriously, I'm awestruck.? And next year, we?ll start with a novel(la) by Michael Kimball, whose most recent book was lauded by Oprah.com and The New York Times, and we?ll publish a Nephew title written by a ten-year-old home-schooled girl from Las Vegas, which we?ll be publishing as a non-profit book to fundraise for a local youth literacy program.

What is next for you?

My latest novel Water was released this fall, and was described by Fence Books?s Joyelle McSweeney in this way: ?As Tyler manipulates a deliberately constrained vocabulary -- Boy, Girl, Land, Ocean, Woods, Axe, Egg -- a minutely configured and reconfigured universe comes into view in which bodies are conducting materials for violence and rain pours down as relentlessly and ambiguously as existence itself. Tyler pursues this vision with stamina and acuity: dead-on, a dead-eye.?

I?m also looking forward to two major releases in 2013: The Zoo, A Going(Dzanc Books) and Colony Collapse (Lazy Fascist Press). Lastly, if people want to hear me read or chat with me about my work, I?ll be reading at The University of Alabama?s Bankhead Visiting Writers Series on Oct. 18th as well as headlining an online reading for Aqueous Books on Nov. 14th. Folks can also find my books and contact info at www.chokeonthesewords.com.

Any advice for young writers?

Words can do whatever you want them to.

Giants make 'statement' in routing 49ers 26-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The New York Giants issued a statement of their own to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh on Sunday.

Maybe the rest of the NFL, too.

While questions still surround the defending Super Bowl champions, New York's 26-3 rout of the favored 49ers sent a clear message across the league.

"The statement made," wide receiver Victor Cruz said, "is that we're here to stay."

Antrel Rolle intercepted two passes by Alex Smith, Prince Amukamara picked off another and the Giants shut down San Francisco in a rematch of last season's NFC championship game. After outscoring the Bills and Jets by a combined 79-3 the last two weeks, the 49ers (4-2) met their match again.

No overtime needed this time, and not much of Eli Manning, either.

Manning threw for 193 yards and one touchdown, Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 116 yards and a score and New York (4-2) rode that dominant defense and four field goals by Lawrence Tynes to hand the outspoken Harbaugh the most lopsided loss of his tenure.

What a San Francisco treat.

"We were just waiting for them to play like we know they can play," Manning said of New York's defense. "They played outstanding. They played really well, flying around."

The Giants grinded out a 20-17 overtime win at rain-soaked Candlestick Park on Jan. 22, capitalizing on two fumbles by fill-in punt returner Kyle Williams en route to another Super Bowl victory over the Patriots. All week, some San Francisco players talked about "unfinished business." And Harbaugh added to the hype when he fired back a strongly worded statement criticizing Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, who had mostly praised San Francisco and defensive end Justin Smith before saying the All-Pro often "gets away with murder" holding linemen.

Harbaugh issued a news release calling that an "outrageous, irrational statement" and said "it's obvious that the Giants coaching staff's sole purpose is to use their high visibility to both criticize and influence officiating."

For all the hoopla, the rematch was never close.

Amukamara's interception in the second quarter started a surge of New York offense. Smith, who wore tape around his sprained middle finger that he said wasn't an issue, lofted the pass too high and allowed Amukamara to leap underneath the ball before tight end Delanie Walker even had a chance at the Giants 33.

At one point in the first half, Manning completed eight consecutive passes for 142 yards and had the usually stout San Francisco defense out of sorts. Domenik Hixon tip-toed the sideline to catch passes of 39 and 16 yards on consecutive third downs, and Cruz followed with a 6-yard touchdown reception and his usual salsa dance in the end zone for a 7-3 lead.

"We know last year wasn't a fluke," Bradshaw said. "We know what we can be."

Tynes kicked a 34-yard field goal for a 10-3 lead and Tarell Brown blocked a 40-yard attempt by Tynes, which led to David Akers' miss wide left from 52 yards as the half expired.

Akers, who tied the NFL record with a 63-yard field goal in a Week 1 win at Green Bay, also hooked a 43-yarder wide right on San Francisco's first drive. He made a 42-yarder from the same right hash mark. The All-Pro kicker is 11 of 16 this season.

"It wasn't a great day for any of us," Harbaugh said.

Once the break was over, the Giants sent San Francisco spiraling down and out in a New York minute.

David Wilson returned the second-half kickoff 66 yards to set up Bradshaw's 1-yard TD run. That quieted the Candlestick crowd ? except for the Giants fans that sprinkled the stands blue on a sun-splashed day along the bay.

The 49ers had not allowed a 100-yard rusher in the previous 22 home games. The last time was Tennessee's Chris Johnson, who ran for 135 yards on Nov. 8, 2009

On San Francisco's next two possessions, Rolle intercepted Smith's passes. The first came on an overthrown pass intended for former Giant Mario Manningham that Rolle returned 20 yards to the San Francisco 12. On the second, he stepped in front of a pass to Williams and ran 22 yards to the San Francisco 5.

"I could tell, at times, we had him a little rattled," Rolle said.

"It's tough to speak about any other facet," Smith said. "We made it tough on the defense."

The only downside for New York is it settled for field goals both times. Then again, not many points were needed.

The Giants sacked Smith six times and had him under constant pressure, made worse when left tackle Joe Staley left with a concussion in the third quarter. Smith finished 19 of 30 for 200 yards, and the 49ers were held to 80 yards rushing.

"The nice thing was the pounding away of the pencil on the defensive line," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I think the defensive line finally decided they were going to come out and play today and they did."

The 49ers were coming off a 45-3 home romp against Buffalo, racking up a franchise-record 621 yards and becoming the first team in NFL history with 300 yards passing and 300 yards rushing in the same game. This time, they were smashed.

"Coaches always let us know that we're not the kings of the NFL, the Giants are," 49ers cornerback Carlos Rogers said. "They won a title last year and they're still that team to beat until somebody wins the Super Bowl."

NOTES: San Francisco's 16-6 loss at the Baltimore Ravens last Thanksgiving night had been the most lopsided defeat the last two seasons. ... It was the seventh time in Smith's career the 2005 No. 1 overall pick threw three interceptions and first since a 27-13 loss at Philadelphia on Dec. 20, 2009. ... 49ers RB Brandon Jacobs, who was inactive again, was in the Giants locker room handing out hugs and handshakes after the game to his former teammates.

Paul Ryan Pumps Iron in Time Mag Photo Shoot

The ogling of P90X workout fanatic-turned vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan reached a fever pitch today as photos of the ultra-fit Republican hit the Internet.

Hours before the vice presidential debate, Ryan's first appearance on the nationally televised debate stage, Time magazine released six photos of Ryan clad in gray work-out gear and a red baseball hat with headphone cords dangling down his back as he pumps 50-pound dumbbells.

The images were taken nearly a year ago when the Wisconsin congressman was a runner-up for the Time Person of the Year issue. The House budget chairman's intense workout routine was little known outside the congressional gym.

But 10 months later, Ryan's fit figure, coupled with his newfound national fame as Mitt Romney's GOP running mate, has spawned Internet memes, Twitter accounts and online admirers. Within hours after Time published the photos, two of which feature Ryan doing bicep curls, the Twitter account @PaulRyansBicep was born.

"Schedule for tonight: 8pm Workout. 9pm Debate. 11pm Workout," one tweet reads.

"Fact check this: I can bench press more than you," another notes.

The"Hey Girl, It's Paul Ryan" meme nabbed one of the images for its latest online meme, adding these words over the image of Ryan curling a 50-pound dumbbell, "Hey Girl, defending your wallet at the debate means TRAINING."

Ryan, 49, has not shied away from his now-infamous workout routine on the campaign trail, despite the online attention. His father and grandfather died of heart disease, a genetic history he is combating by keeping his body fat below 8 percent.

Even the strenuous campaign trail can't keep him away from his workouts.

"I'm going to keep myself in shape, that's for sure," Ryan told Yahoo News shortly after being selected as the vice presidential running mate.

Panetta urges NATO allies to help train Afghans

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Wednesday the NATO coalition has turned an important corner in Afghanistan, and has come too far and spilled too much blood to let insider attacks or anything else undermine the mission there.

While he and other ministers refused to provide details of the expected withdrawal of troops in the coming two years, he said that from mid-2013 onward the U.S. and its allies will operate from fewer bases and the flow of military supplies and material out of Afghanistan will begin to grow.

Panetta also used his time during the closed session of the NATO conference here Wednesday to urge the other defense ministers to help fill the shortfall of military training teams in Afghanistan. The teams, he said, are critical to building the capabilities of the Afghan forces so they can take control of their country's security by the end of 2014.

Panetta asked that NATO allies provide the roughly 60 teams that are needed ? which would bring the total to 465 ? and give those commitments by later next month. It has been a persistent plea from the U.S. for the last three years, as NATO worked to increase the Afghan security forces to about 352,000.

"The U.S. has filled a disproportionate number of these teams in recent years, and I ask for your help to fill the gap," Panetta said, calling this a "critical moment" in the war.

He later told reporters that ministers responded positively. He said they told him they would try to provide the teams. But he also acknowledged that, as in the past, the U.S. would continue to provide additional teams as well.

The overriding theme at the conference, repeated by Panetta and others, was that NATO nations went into Afghanistan together and will go out together, and violence and challenges there have triggered no decline in commitment to the fight.

"Whatever tactics the enemy throws at us ...we will not allow those tactics to divide us from our Afghan partners, and we will not allow those tactics to divert us from the mission we are dedicated to," Panetta told reporters. "We've come too far, we've fought too many battles, we have spilled too much blood not to finish the job."

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen echoed those sentiments, saying that no one will be able to drive a wedge between the Afghan and coalition forces. "The insider attacks will not change our strategy," he said.

Already this year insider attacks, in which Afghan forces or insurgents dressed like them, have killed or injured 130 allied forces.

In Washington, President Barack Obama nominated Marine Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, to be the next NATO supreme allied commander.

Allen is slated to replace Admiral Jim Stavridis in the spring, and Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the assistant Marine commandant, would take the top Afghanistan job. The changes must be confirmed by the Senate.

During the NATO meeting, Allen and Panetta assured the ministers that commanders have come up ways to reduce the insider attacks.

The tactics to reduce the attacks have largely been in place for some time. They include increased vetting of Afghan recruits, enhanced training and cultural awareness, greater use of so-called guardian angel troops who stand guard to protect their comrades, and a new system that requires partnered operations with small units to be approved by top commanders.

Rasmussen seemed to reject any idea that there will be any acceleration in the drawdown, despite concerns about the insider attacks.

"This is not about speeding up," said Rasmussen, adding that the coalition will execute a careful, deliberate and coordinated process for the transfer of security to the Afghans by the time the NATO combat mission ends in 2014. "This is not a rush for the exit."

At that time, NATO will change to a training and advisory mission. NATO ministers are expected to endorse a broad framework for that transition during their meeting here.

That mission is also likely to include continued counterterrorism efforts by the U.S. There have been suggestions that a force of as many as 20,000 troops could remain in Afghanistan after the end of 2014, but no decisions have been made. Allen is expected to provide some recommendations before the end of the year on the pace and number of U.S. troops leaving Afghanistan beginning in 2013.

Dunford has been assistant commandant since October 2010. Allen took over the Afghanistan job in July 2011, after serving as the acting commander of U.S. Central Command for a short time.

Why it's finally time to ditch Windows XP

1 hr.

When Microsoft introduced Windows Vista in 2007, many people refused to make the switch from Windows XP, an operating system they liked a lot.

Windows XP still has a legion of devoted users who've stuck with the old system, despite all the bells and whistles and improved security of Windows 7. Some of those users would probably prefer to avoid Windows 8 as well.?

However, Microsoft rained on the XP users' parade when the company announced it would be ending its support for the aging OS by April 2014.

That means there will be no more upgrades for XP, and no more security patches.

[ Windows 8's New Security Features Explained ]

Withdrawing the troops
That's very bad news for anyone who uses XP, according to Fortinet Research's Stefanie Hoffman.

"Legacy XP systems will become increasingly vulnerable to zero-day attacks and other security threats," Hoffman wrote in a recent blog posting. "The sudden absence of support for XP leaves a void that will likely be filled by a slew of old and/or soon-to-be-discovered vulnerabilities and subsequently give rise to a new crop of security exploits that specifically target these legacy systems, which are now devoid of security updates or support."

Fortinet investigated just how dangerous older and/or outdated operating systems can be to computers. The threat team checked its database for malware snapshots on the same date every year over the past 13 years ? during which Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 were released ? and found that older operating systems typically have more exploit activity.

That's partly because malicious code and exploit kits for older systems have more time to circulate and mature. It's also because the security on newer operating systems is simply better.

As Hoffman pointed out, "It's also harder today to get a working rootkit for Windows 7 than Windows XP thanks to Microsoft technology such as PatchGuard, which protects the kernel of an operating system from being unduly modified."

Here come the barbarians
So what can XP users expect if they decide to avoid an upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, or wait until April 2014 to make the switch?

"Full-disclosure security research typically follows a certain pattern: a vulnerability is discovered by a security researcher, a bulletin is released to numerous security mailing lists outlining the vulnerability, and there is a frantic scramble for manufacturers to repair the problem," explained Dylan Evans, vice president of operations at Reveal Digital Forensics and Security in Boise, Idaho. ?

"These same mailing lists are also monitored by hackers, meaning that once a new vulnerability is discovered, there will be a rise in attempted attacks until the problem is patched entirely," Evans said.

You shouldn't be lulled into thinking that just because a new strain of malware is released, targeting a newer operating system, that your old machine will be off the hook.

"New operating system versions still reuse much of the same code, especially when considering the kernel," Evans said. "This means that newly discovered vulnerabilities have the potential to affect old operating systems long past the date that support ends for them.

"If the manufacturer doesn't repair the security hole, it is generally up to third-party security researchers to discover a patch. The average user will neither be aware of the vulnerability nor the patch due to the lack of automatic support, and this puts them at risk."

Even Mac owners need to upgrade
Windows machines get the bulk of the attention of vulnerabilities in operating systems, but Mac owners also need to remember that updates to the latest operating-system versions are equally important to their security.?

"On the Mac OS front, the newest versions, Lion and, more recently, Mountain Lion, have made moves that showed that Apple was more serious about security," said Ryan Permeh, chief technology officer at Newport Beach, Calif., security firm Cylance.

"With the Lion release, Apple started to use an app store model similar to their iDevices. This allows a control point for getting updates, and offering a degree of quality control on the software that is offered," Permeh said.

"Additionally, in Mountain Lion, they implemented a new system called Gatekeeper as a default protection mechanism. Gatekeeper ensures that applications that run must be signed by an appropriate signing vendor. This ensures that rogue applications do not run."

In the end, said Evans, the same very important rule of thumb applies to any piece of software, whether it's an operating system or an anti-virus program: stay current.

"When you can't stay current anymore, like when a manufacturer drops support for an old OS," Evans said, "you absolutely need to upgrade if you plan on keeping your personal information safe."

How alleged 'arsenic munching' bacteria survives in toxic Calif. lake

The bacteria, a member of the genus Halomonadaceae, live in California's Mono Lake, amidst concentrations of arsenic that would kill most other life forms.

Bacteria that became famous for their alleged "arsenic-munching" ability, a phenomenon later proved unlikely, may have evolved to sport proteins that filter out the toxic element, new research suggests.

The bacteria, called GFAJ-1, a member of the genus Halomonadaceae, live in California's Mono Lake, amidst concentrations of arsenic that would kill most other life forms. During a 2010 NASA news conference, Felisa Wolfe-Simon, then of NASA's Astrobiology Institute, announced?GFAJ-1 was incorporating arsenate?(a form of arsenic) into its DNA in place of phosphate (a compound commonly used by life).

Though the announcement was?met with plenty of skepticism, one argument behind the swap was the fact that arsenate and phosphate are chemically similar, as both are atoms bonded with four oxygen atoms.

Now, at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, a team led by Dan Tawfik and Mikael Elias found GFAJ-1 is equipped with a "filtering" mechanism that single cells are known to use for keeping out toxic arsenate. [Extreme Life on Earth: 8 Bizarre Creatures]

Blocking out arsenate

They found these proteins in GFAJ-1 are very specific ? they don't bind easily to arsenate at all, despite the similarity to phosphate. The reason? An arsenate ion has a slightly different shape than a phosphate ion. At the point where phosphate binds to the protein, the angle between the oxygen atom, a hydrogen atom and the protein is 179.1 degrees. The strength of the bond would be strongest if it were 180 degrees.

Meanwhile, an arsenate ion binds with an angle of 162 degrees, making a much weaker link. It isn't just the single bond, though, that makes the difference; there is more than one such hydrogen bond that links the phosphate to the protein. "Just one bond wouldn't be enough," Elias said.

When GFAJ-1 needs nutrients, it sends the protein out between its inner and outer membrane (called the periplasm). The protein picks up phosphate and delivers it to the inside of the cell. It doesn't link to arsenate as strongly, so it is much less likely to bring it in.

The selectivity is so good that the protein can be exposed to arsenate levels 3,000 times those in Mono Lake without binding to much of it at all, the researchers said. [Stunning Images of Mono Lake]

Refuting arsenic life

The findings, published in the Oct. 4 issue of Science, come after two other papers, published in July, called Wolfe-Simon's work into question.

One paper, from a team led by Marshall Reaves at Princeton and Rosie Redfield at the University of British Columbia, attempted to duplicate Wolfe-Simon's finding that?GFAJ-1 had arsenate in its DNA; they found none. The second study, a team led by Tobias Erb of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology found that GFAJ-1 could grow on very small amounts of phosphorus ? smaller than those found by Wolfe-Simon's team.

All known life forms use six basic elements: hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur. A?new life formthat could use arsenic in place of phosphorus would be a major finding.

Reaves said the Weizmann institute paper isn't a complete?refutation of Wolfe-Simon's work, as it doesn't directly address the question of whether any life form can incorporate arsenic into its DNA. But it does show how GFAJ-1 might be so arsenate-tolerant, even though it doesn't have a typical set of arsenate-resistance genes. "GFAJ-1, living in abundant arsenate, evolved the commonplace [phosphorus binding proteins] present in other microbes towards ones with dramatically higher specificity," Reaves wrote in an email.

Elias said he hopes future research will reveal how such resistance evolved. Humans and other multi-cellular creatures don't show the genes that produce these proteins, probably because we get phosphates from our food, rather than directly absorbing them from our environment. But among bacteria there are many versions of these genes.

It was, in fact, Wolfe-Simon's work that inspired the experiments in the first place, though Elias had been studying the proteins already. "We saw that and my supervisor [Tawfik] and I said 'that can't be right,'" he said. They were pretty sure that bacteria couldn't use arsenic in their DNA the way Wolfe-Simon seemed to suggest. But coming up with a "filtering" mechanism proved harder to do.

There were three possibilities: either Wolfe-Simon was right, in which case she had found a life form that could operate with a?biochemistry unlike anything on Earth; there was some mechanism for expelling arsenate from the cell, or there was some way for the cell to block out the arsenate altogether.

For her part, Wolfe-Simon, via email, said the new research, "represents the kind of careful and interesting studies that aid the community. They have helped us understand molecular level discrimination between arsenate and phosphate in GFAJ-1 and other microbes." She added that her own work spoke to the presence of arsenate in the cells, and that "questions are as to how and where."

Editor's Note: This article has been updated to correct a quote, in which the researcher misspoke about the scarcity of phosphate in Mono Lake.
